>Space-based technology is of value to farmers, agronomists, food manufacturers and agricultural policymakers who wish to simultaneously enhance production and profitability. Remote sensing satellites provide key data for monitoring soil, snow cover, drought and crop development. Rainfall assessments from satellites, for example, help farmers plan the timing and amount of irrigation they will need for their crops. Accurate information and analysis can also help predict a region's agricultural output well in advance and can be critical in anticipating and mitigating the effects of food shortages and famines.

At t-13 the timer clearly paused then continued, then at t-1 it paused and the comms declared that it was a raptor abort. So whatever happens to the raptor at t-13 probably started an issue that engaged the final abort at t-1 and it's most likely to do with the engine or engine feed.

We can probably surmise that Starship uses the same method of load and launch as a F9 FT/Merlin, at t-20 the rocket most likely has maximum Flight Pressure and at t-15 the Vehicle Configured for Flight meaning the computer fully takes over the launch. It can be speculated that a pressure irregularity between the tanks and the engine was detected the moment the Starship computers took over the countdown but seemed to stabilize after a few seconds so it continued until the same pressure issue maybe was detected again at t-1 forcing the system to abort.

Anyway that's my blind speculation.

Mars colony design, meme propulsion systems, and the lack of good interplanetary scifi recently.

On a related note, could you use higher thrust plasma engines and some CO2 tankage to replace the ion drives and hypergolic thrusters on the DST for faster transit to Mars? Isp is still higher than achievable with NTR solid core, and you could do atmospheric ISRU pretty easily if you had Starships around for ferry duty to LMO. Might be a good way to reduce radiation exposure for passenger transit if you can launch the thing on a single cargo Starship from Earth and transfer crew in LEO.

We're still not really close to the level of technological maturation where there's a do-it-all spaceship, the good part about Starship is that in spite of differences in variants most all of the gross architecture is the same. Same material, same process for manufacture, same tanks, same engines, Moonship actually has LESS complexity because you can lose the fins and heat shield.
Starship though is specifically meant as a colonization vessel, it isn't the best for pure cargo fraction (as in kg of cargo per kg of ship), it isn't the best tug, it isn't the most efficient, it's been specifically optimized to take off for Mars as part of a huge fleet element to shit out an entire massive colony in one go.

As much as I like it, it's not going to be the Space Lada, once it's fulfilled it's purpose of setting up a colony on Mars, Elon will probably already be moving on to an even more ambitious rocket. I said it in another thread, it will be the Model T of the new rocket age, but we don't use Model Ts for serious work anymore and the same will be true of Starship.

Don't know about that, but HDLT will give us the Jovian and Saturnine systems, and it would make Mars, Venus and Mercury not dissimilar from long stints on the ocean now. The drive isn't really the problem, any good magnetoplasma drive can open up most of the good stuff in the solar system for us, what we need is for some person, company, or government to grow the balls to build a good high energy density nuclear powerplant for space application to power such a drive, ideally you'd want a good MW/e or more to play around with.

Given the option I'm sure that Elon would prefer to throw a standard Starship at the moon, eat the regolith damage and use it to setup a permanent landing pad for future Starships to use. But Moonship is a NASA funded project and as a result it needs to be purpose built for their requirements like being able to rendezvous with Gateway.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see one or two Moonships ever to fulfill the HLS contract and then once a proper base is built SpaceX just starts supplying it from regular Starships. Maybe they drag the specialized design out just to create new landing sites in other distant moon locations.

Unless I'm missing something the only salient problem with HDLT right now seems to be that nobody really knows how the fuck it works and thus the development of the technology is limited by ignorance of it's exact mechanism, and that seems to be a running theme with several of the other plasma thrusters too.

If I may add on to this: HDLT engines (or similar engines) are basically unusable right now BUT what they offer is amazing. Because they use no internal components, it means they don’t degrade over time the way current ion thrusters do. Add to this the fact that they can use basically anything as fuel: this means you can just dumb shit in and get a REALLY good thrust. If we can master this style of engine just imagine getting to Mars in like 3 months instead of 9 months, being able to refuel with anything, and never having to worry about engine degradation or expensive replacement parts

I wanted to write a book series back in high school based of sorts of the Expanse. Too bad my writing skills are shit.

Earth and Mars are locked in a Cold War, but neither side is really prepped for it. Mars gained its freedom a century ago but since then neither side made much effort to build up their navies. Meanwhile Titan also said was granted independence alongside Mars, and they ended up creating a monopoly on the export of Helium 3. Mars and Earth are different too. Earth is a cushy world where people don’t work a day in their lives and is effectively Weimar 2.0, while Mars is a neo-Fascist state run by its military.

Anyways I even drafted characters and shit. The book follows a new captain in the Martian navy who faces the decimation of said navy by Titan’s fleet in a sneak attack. Earth also faces this, and the Earth and Mars have to team up to take down Titan’s military. Anyways Titan loses its foothold in the Jovian system, their invasion of the Earth-territory of Mercury fails, and they are driven back into the Saturn system. Titan eventually falls, and the war ends. However remnants of Titan’s fleet continue the fight in the Kuiper belt, which eventually are destroyed too.

Anyways eventually the main ship is refit and five years after the end of the Titan Wars, pirates attempt to steal the refit Martian ship. They get BTFO’d.

The last book/part in the series sees a military coup on Mars. A civil war ensues and the protagonist and his crew are divided over what is right in human terms, or state terms. The series’ main ship is destroyed and crashes. The protagonist and what’s left of the characters team up with Earth-based special forces and undergo a suicide mission which detonates an antimatter bomb on Phobos, killing the coup leaders alongside the protagonist.

An epilogue takes place 75 years later and follows a young boy visiting the “MN_Mave DD-152” wreckage as part of a school trip.

So will SN8 be trying to fly again today or do they have to get another round of special approval from the FAA?

Regular Starship will be able to land on the moon after a base gets established and they build a landing pad with flame trenches.

It depends what you're into. His schtick is what is actually possible given a few million years and equivalent budget. If you just want dry facts on the composition of Saturn's atmosphere, or fictional sci-fi, there are other content providers. Personally I like >comfy speculation.

80s Expanse would be Soviet union (+ Eastern block) vs. USA (+ Europe and Japan) over control of their colonies with varying degree of independence, cooperation and size
With also other major powers like China, France-centric EU or British Commonwealth having their own smaller settlements

I reckon USSR would be more militaristic in space and wouldn't allow any independence, whereas US wouldn't be necessarily against the idea as former colony themselves
it wouldn't be Mars vs. Earth separatism, but rather Cydonian Soviet Republic trying to join United States of Mars or something similar
Bit more like The Moon is a Harsh Mistress without the penal farming colony subplot
