bros... all the papers I read cite 100+ sources. How am I ever gonna achieve this for my own papers? I probably use like 20 sources max.

These papers aren't written in a weekend. A lot of citations come from the literature review and references to methods developed by other authors. My first published paper for undergrad had about 80 citations in the bibliography. It takes work but isn't as bad as it sounds.

Anon, just mention some barely related work in the related work section and you will be fine.

Just cite a bunch of random articles to impress the reader lmao.

they list that many sources because they need to look that much shit up. You're probably smarter than they are since you only had to look up 20 other articles to prove your thesis

All memes aside, this is kinda true. Size doesn't matter. A short well-argumented paper is just as impressive as something that takes more effort.

the easiest way to get 300 (you's) on 4chan is climate/race/pol-posting
the easiest way to get 10M views on youtube is clickbait craft videos for women, children, and bots

The lit review I'm working on is just 58 sources due to shit deadlines and some journalistic side-projects related to my boss's specific department, but that's only from a surface level scan of research through some online libraries and google scholar. You can always add more journal articles by picking out citations in your main finds. Finding citations isn't difficult, and annotating them isn't difficult either, it's just a really time consuming process.

a lot of those references get about 10 seconds of the authors attention

I refuse to cite anyone in my papers because I care not if what I'm writing has been written before.

Just cite random shit in your field. The more people you reference, the more likely it is that your reviewers are among them and will push your paper through to boost their own citation count.
Citation metrics are fucking retarded anyway.
