Physicists have never recovered from this. They suffer from imposter syndrome as you can see, with "mathematical" physics being their cope now.

Literally started learning physics for fun and within a few years btfo all the physicists.

there is some truth in that. Today there is a huge gap between experimentalists and theorists, especially in fields like HEP. Experimentalists are really good physicists but terrible mathematicians, and theorists are mediocre physicists and mediocre mathematicians.
