Assuming FH flies late this summer, the SLS will have taken longer and costed far more to develop than it took to bootstrap a new space company from scratch, develop a moderate-lift orbital rocket, make the damn thing land itself, and develop a self-landing heavy-lift vehicle.

>That's insane. It means that NASA potentially could've had their heavy lift rocket faster and cheaper if they had started a new company and developed it from scratch than they would have with the "duct tape it together" plan.

Nasa's budget is 22.6 billion,

Musk estimated that Starlink could bring in revenue of $30 billion a year – or about 10 times the highest annual revenue SpaceX expects from its core rocket business. SpaceX deploys 60 Starlink satellites in orbit.

This was my point. The shuttle was a space plane because it had the ability to glide while Starship will only ever be falling. It is the gliding that marks the difference. The AoA of 70 is there for nearly the entire fall while the shuttle dropped to an AoA that let it glide as soon as it it could safely do so.

Even optimised for super sonic flight, a plane has to be able to fly along a plane. If the engines cut out, a super sonic aircraft will still have a glide profile though, granted, not a very good one. Starship will have no such ability. Can you offer an explanation of the implied opinion that starship is a space plane? Is there a rational? What is it about the ballistic flappy-tube that makes you say its a space plane? What makes it a plane? (The space part is pretty obvious, I think.)
I just asked a lot of questions but I think the last one is the only one that's really relevant.

They should still make Long Dragon for Falcon Heavy so they can man-rate it, just take the existing dragon and fuse it with the currently hollow trunk section, make all of that internal space pressurized volume and include a beefier life support system to give it 30-day independent flight like Soyuz.
It could act as a good LEO bus for the small and anemic space projects that governments carry out while Starship does the heavy lifting beyond Earth's sphere of influence.
I also love how the sleek white Iphone look which used to be considered futuristic is now growing to characterize an outdated generation of space vehicles while while the next big heavy lifter will be a semi-retro steel Flash Gordon rocket.

I don't think so, considering it's attached to a Falcon Heavy with four boosters, but it does fit the Falcon aesthetic style pretty well. I had said in the previous thread that it would be cool if you just merged a Dragon capsule with the reusable 2S to create a Long Dragon. You could use the same enlarged 2S propulsion unit for payload like it's displayed in the renders as well.
Imagine the Gs you'd be pulling on Falcon Superheavy. 128 tons of payload to orbit at a gentle 20 fucking gees.

The honk is not absolutely an indication of something having gone wrong, but it's not a good noise to hear from a rocket engine, it means there's a slight level of combustion instability inside the lip of the expander bell which is causing the bell itself to vibrate.
This is not a healthy thing for a rocket engine and it can damage the engine post-shutdown or cause it to explode post-startup as was the case with the early F-1's.
There are a couple ways it can be addressed though, you can slightly reduce the length of the bell to reduce flow separation, include baffles on the powerhead, or create a slight inward turning lip at the edge of the expansion bell to keep the exhaust flush with the wall.
If Raptors are having combustion instability issues, it's not even remotely an insurmountable or dealbreaking problem, worst case scenario they'd have to sacrifice 1-2% maximum efficiency in exchange for 100% reliability, not a bad trade.

What would be the re-entry performance of a Spaceplane orbiter with variable-sweep wings like an F-14? Assuming the undersides of the wings and horizontal tail surface are adequately protected by thermal insulation, would high-speed high-altitude gliding performance be similar to an ogival delta like the Shuttle? Low speed performance wouldn't matter because when the orbiter drops below mach .5 on its glide slope it would unsweep its wings forward for extremely nimble performance.

God-mode engineering would have the wings fitted with single-slotted fowler flaps and leading edge krueger flaps that would allow for cessna-like landing ease. This would allow it to land at absolutely any airport or airstrip in the world, and even potentially on public highways in an emergency.

If you want to look at how to do this right: look at the Falcon Heavy. Its importance was, in retrospect, very overstated but that didn't stop everyone from wetting their pants over it. "Launching Elon's personal car to Mars" was a brilliant hook, and they did an amazing job of turning the event into a genuine EVENT. I mean, synching fairing release to music? Holy shit! And the synched landings as a crescendo solidified the entire thing in people's minds forever. Even though the FH hasn't seen much action people still remember and talk about it because the communication surrounding it was ace.

What a realistic independence movement in space might look like
>Short-term, private actors could use contracts to begin separating activities from terrestrial control. Could require participants to use space-based dispute resolution & avoid recourse to terrestrial courts, so long as everything is consistent with the OST & applicable law.
>Skipping ahead, once you have a functioning entity, you're going to largely be meeting traditional requirements for independence. Territorial control, institutions of governance, etc. You did all this without doing any violence to the existing legal system.
>You've got at least two interrelated issues. 1, how to get recognized. 2, where you fit in the international system. Recognition is hard, and will be a (hopefully peaceful) fight. But we've done that before, kosovo, etc. You need to demonstrate that you can govern.
>Being truly self-sustaining probably isn't necessary (no country is) but as a practical matter you are going to need an independent source of funds, something to trade, etc. as bare minimum.

We have been over this, commercial crew program was just another way to throw a shitload of money at boeing.
SpaceX just got lucky and recieved some pocketchange compared to the cut that boeing had because they needed some other parties because of the "commercial" part of the program.
Nobody expected spaceX to succeed, hell, boeing's entire plan was to ask for more money when spaceX eventually failed if recent leaks are real.

Per NSF's Starliner discussion
>The problem is that Boeing figured that - since the client was NASA - they could get away with doing a lousy job on a milestone-based Firm Fixed Price contract and finish the milestones properly upon getting (much) additional money.

>But reality bit Boeing in the behind when NASA did NOT turn the Firm Fixed Price contract into (pseudo) Cost-Plus. Which in turn led Boeing to flying OFT while the d*rn thing was nowhere near ready to fly.

>And even after the disaster that was OFT-1 Boeing still expected that NASA would pick up the tab for the OFT re-flight. In essence, Boeing expected NASA to pay additional money so that Boeing could meet a required milestone. That is not how milestone-based Firm Fixed Price contracts work.

>Fortunaly NASA said no despite Boeing trying to convince NASA during negotiations that lasted for months.

>Boeing management fundamentally does not understand the workings and implications of a milestones-based Firm Fixed Price contract.

>From what I have learned from various sources in the 10 months since OFT-1 is that Boeing management expected (from 2013 forward) that the Firm Fixed Price contract for CCtCAP would eventually morph into a pseude Cost-Plus contract.

>Fortunately for Commercial Crew that never happened.

>This expectation by Boeing management was based on a number of incorrect assumptions, prime being that they expected SpaceX to fail in delivering a working product for just $2.6 billion (which is exactly the thing you already mentioned). Boeing expected that SpaceX would eventually go back to NASA and ask for more money. Which in turn would open the door for Boeing going to NASA and asking for more money.

>Quite frankly I find it amazing that Boeing expected SpaceX to fail, given the track-record SpaceX had by then (2013), courtesy of COTS and CRS phase 1.
