12288785 No.12288785 [Reply] [Original]

I'm in community college and I've cheated through Calc 1 with maybe a B and I'm halfway through Calc 2 still cheating. I've been struggling with a C but now it's dipping down into a D and I'm at a loss of what to do.

Since the entire class has been online (corona-virus & low paid professors), I've just been brute-forcing my homework and quizzes, and for tests I've been using Wolfram Alpha in creative ways to solve problems. The issue is I've reached the point in the class where problems are becoming so abstract I can't figure out how to input/output them into wolfram alpha anymore.

For example, I've encountered problems where you are expected to solve problems using the Trapezoid Rule. Easy enough to do with Wolfram Alpha, but then it expects me to calculate the expected error with the Trapezoid Rule and I'm completely stumped.

I'm worried that I might be fucked and beginning to either fail or at least slipping a lot. Is it possible for me to still pass and get a decent grade or am I screwed? Basically I barely know what I'm doing and have nothing memorized. Looking for solutions and considerations. Details and Specifics greatly appreciated.

Don't know if I'm the first person to employ such a strategy to pass Calc classes.

Just don't use it anymore you fucking retard. When most people ask for advice for a problem, they typically already know the answer to that problem. We're not here to be an echo chamber for your feeble mind

you're fine then. you should also use desmos and geogebra/3d to visualize problems when you have a hard time knowing what's going on, especially in calc 3 where you have 3-dimensional shit that's hard to visualize. Not sure about your specific situation, but if there's a section that is difficult to cheat like the example you gave, you just have to power through that section and actually learn it.

I could understand if you got WA pro to see solution steps to double-check your work to ensure that you aren't sending in complete garbage and to learn by simply having it spelled out to you what you are supposed to be doing until you figure out how to do it yourself. But simply using it to get the output and nothing else is just retarded, especially considering the fact that for some problems it will give you results that are unusable or just plain wrong.

>> No.12291350

Op is probably Chinese

>> No.12292020

>>12291350
Now that you say that, you might probably be right.
In China education is flipped on its head in terms of difficulty. While in the West school is (intended to be) relaxed with a really steep increase in expectations at university, for the Chinese it is the other way around in that school is the one with very harsh expectations and university is used as a period of relaxation. And I don't mean this in regards to the free time students have but rather in the grading. In China someone giving a course and being strict in university will actually be shunned and reprimanded for expecting students to do the work they showed up to university to be learning.
I'm sure you can see the consequence of this both in the quality of Chinese construction (along with the lack of innovation coming from China) and in the drone mentality drilled into their brains since childhood. And these two things are the reason why universities in the West have stated that they want entrance exams for Chinese students since they have observed that the students are capable of memorising the study material but lack the creativity and out-of-the-box thinking expected from students for solving problems.

I used Wolfram Alpha for most of my math classes because I was at least competent enough to translate the problems into something it could calculate. (I'm absolutely terrible working with actual numbers and mental math, might have dyscalculia or something, but I'm okay with math in the abstract.)

If you're so awful that not only are you unable to pass this class without cheating but you're also unable to even get the questions in an interpretable format to cheat with, you're beyond any hope.

I also use OP's method, however I'm getting an A in Calc 2 currently. The difference is I actually go back and take time to understand the problems I bullshitted on the homework (it's literally only so I can make the professors retarded deadlines and get extra time to study for other classes - on the weekends I'm catching up like a crackhead). I haven't gotten lower than a B on any quiz/exam. Cheat, but cheat wisely OP.

Bro you're supposed to use chegg for all the answers. Write them all down in a notebook too and use that on the exams. I have 100% in every class, even calc 2, and I'm actually learning it just from writing it all down. Though to be fair, I did the traditional way in calc 1 and got an 89%

if calc 1 is "painfully boring and feels like a waste of [your] time" then what are you even doing on this board? what kind of answers did you expect? it's one of the most foundational topics.

>> No.12294743

Man I passed that class with a 4.0 and I don't remember shit.
in vector calculus I just looked up integration rules.
all that shit about error and such, I couldn't give a fuck about remembering something like that.
just google it and do the algebra, mr retard.
the difference between me and you is that if I use wolfram alpha to do a homework assignment it's because I don't feel like doing all the computations, I could, but why the fuck do we have computers then?
Knowing exact equations and shit it's that useful, because if it's not already in my recall space then I know it's mostly useless/niche and all I have to remember is the context it's used and words I can looks up to find it.
I mean I could fucking build a computer algebra system.
why the fuck should I be doing computations in my head?
I'm more interested in things computers are bad at.
