I think we all can in any case agree that the advance technology and industrial society has brought about existential problems for life on this earth that will only get clearer as we progress through the 21st century and eventually into the 22nd, whether it be in the form of climate change, generally pollution of our ecosystem, the advance of Artifical Intelligence, the occurance of a pandemic that actually kills people in high numbers, the emergence of worldwide authoritarianism, or a whole host of other issues that can bring humanity to its knees.

Surely having an interplanetary presence would give humanty a safeguard towards some of the major existential crises that industrial society introduces. It might not seem so useful now, but if we think a few generations ahead, it might be vital for the continued long-term survival of our species. Also, the sooner we stretch out and start exploring space, the better. I believe the reason for the Fermi paradox is simply that most intelligent life simply never take the initiative to explore beyond their planet and end up wiping themselves out at some point.

I personally find it inspiring to imagine what our society might look like a century or two from now if we actually make an effort to explore space.
