For real though, Berger has lots of sources directly in the Trump campaign. This is the guy rumored to take over. Jeff DeWit. Fusion gain is the Q people keep talking about, energy out divided by energy in. Q > 1 is necessary for a fusion power plant. The baseline variant requires Q = 20 so the assumption is you'll be getting most of your power from the reactions themselves, probably with a capacitor bank for that first shot from a cold start. Not really though. With the proposed launch price of Starship you could build it pretty quickly for pretty cheap. the main engine assembly could be done in two launches. Then just send up SNC habs and a rotating ring. Plus you would really only need one ferry, maybe three or four eventually. >Q > 1 is necessary for a fusion power plant
Actually that's in the ideal case where energy conversion ratios are 100% efficient. Q = 1 just means your plasma produces a megawatt of energy if you put in a megawatt of thermal and electrical power. With conversion losses included, to achieve break-even fusion (ie a reactor that can power itself perpetually if fed fuel), you need a Q factor between 3 and 5. If you have Q>5 you can do fusion rocket engines, with low thrust but high Isp. The higher the Q factor you can achieve beyond 5, the higher the thrust you can get by increasing mass flow, but the Isp stays about the same. A duel phase fusion rocket engine with a really high Q factor could use excess power generated by the fusion process to power electrical systems that let you microwave your exhaust plasma to even higher temperatures; basically you feed the plasma more of its own energy and achieve higher temperatures, increasing Isp.

Anyway, what the other guy was talking about was an electric plasma engine, not a fusion engine. You'd power it using a megawatt scale thin-film solar array, not nuclear power, because nuclear power can't achieve an electrical power to mass ratio superior to that of solar until you're out beyond Jupiter.

How large are we talking about here? For a small crew mover I'd do something like pic related with CO2 HDLTs instead of Xenon thrusters. For something bigger, I'd use Pratt&Whitney's Triton trimodal design, fed with methane instead of LH2, and paired with HDLTs instead of ion thrusters.

That's not entirely correct, if you have Q=1, you have 2 MW (mostly) thermal output for every 1 MW of power input.
So if you manage to convert that thermal output into electricity at an efficiency of greater than 50%, you're producing power.
Given that the hot side of the thermal machine practicly is only limited by the boilers melting point, it could actualy reach that kind of efficiency, even if it is in several stages.

With an aluminium oxide boiler, you can reach go well beyond 2000 Kelvin on the hot side, in space you can reasonably archive 200 Kelvin on the cold side.
That would result in a Carnot efficiency of 90%.
Real efficiency is obviously not anywhere near as good as that, but getting 50% wouldn't exactly be impossible.

Combined cycle powerplants for example allready reach 63% thermal efficiency with a much higher temperature at the cold side.

Sideways component has no such problem. You can reach any sideways velocity (ignoring speeds approaching speed of light) with relative ease since literally any applied force results in acceleration, and there's no opposing force to cause deceleration.
So orbital velocity is really unimportant. Orbit is full of satelites - there's nothing impressive about their orbital speed, the only impressive part is getting them up there.

Men who drink heavily are more likely to experience:

erectile dysfunction
low testosterone levels
low libido

It’s thought chronic alcohol misuse damages the Leydig cells in your testes, which are responsible for testosterone production. Alcohol may also interfere with the release of LH, FSH, and GnRH.

What I want to see is a Dragon3/SuperDragon which is basically a dragon capsule but instead of the hollow trunk it's got a pressurized cargo, propulsion and power section somewhat like a bigger cygnus. Instead of the superdracos drawing propellants from tanks inside the capsule though they draw them from tanks at the rear of the vehicle, making the capsule section more spacious. The superdracos could then fire in the puller configuration providing all of the propulsion it needs, no new engines required. It would be a logical evolution of Dragon2 which is already it's own completely autonomous spacecraft, except this vehicle would not be reentering the atmosphere, it would be used for stuff like shuttling large crews or cargo around LEO or from LEO to LOPG.
It would be roughly 25-30 tons with 10-15 of those tons given over to cargo, maybe 4x16m in dimension with close to 60m^3 of fully pressurized internal volume and it ought to be designed extremely robust with a multi-year lifespan before any significant maintenance.
For projects too big for oldspace but too small to justify a Starship, or to serve as the core and propulsion system for new private space stations or other composite space vehicles, and really just to expand the functions of Falcon Heavy to justify it's existence.

ULA's plan is basically to lobby their way into government contracts, typically by amending the launch requirements to fit some obscure niche that SpaceX can't cover. (Vertical payload integration, strange orbits, and "reliability") But SpaceX is onto them, building their own vertical payload structure and hiring an army of lobbyists to fight them. Starship is being totally ignored by everyone, the hope being that its landing sequence doesn't work. They might be right, as the whole "belly flop until within the sound barrier, then flip 90 degrees and hope to god your engines relight" strategy is untested and very dangerous looking.

>> No.12262483

Use gimballed Raptors to flip over at 10km, fall ass first and hover slam. Less efficient than the aerodynamic belly flop but it should be easier.
