Are there any astronomers here, amateur or professional? I've been looking into getting a telescope, probably an 8" Dobsonian to start out with, would that be a good choice?

Also astronomy general thread.

A 8" dobsonian is a good start. It will allow you to see colours in the Orion nebula and such. Hope you don't live in a large city or have a car though, because light pollution is a bitch. I use SkyPortal as map app.

Here's my picture of the Pac Man nebula using a hydrogen alpha filter. I'm not that satisfied with the image, the focus could be better. This was when I started with astrophotography.

That's perfect. I started out with a 5" reflector mounted on a flimsy and unstable equatorial mount.

I live on the outskirts of a large city, but if I drive about 40 minutes out on the toll way I think I'll be able to get away from the light pollution a bit.

Do you just put your phones camera eye over the eyepiece or whatever it's called to get the picture?

Pretty much.

Yeah, works fine for brighter stuff. For anything else you would want an adapter for a DSLR and a tracking telescope anyway. But that's all advanced stuff and a Dobson is a great start to get into the hobby, as it allows you to learn the basics and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
