I know there are many people who will say that this is a poor question because you cant compare the difficulty between subjects, but this is just complete nonsense in my opinion. Are you really going to say that its impossible to say that physics is harder than something like political science or kinesiology? Looking at that example, its obvious that certain subjects are harder than others. So at each subjects highest level, which is harder, physics or math?

>> No.12217411

Physics is easier because it's only a subset of maths and reality tells you all the answers.

Definitely physics. As soon as you approach upper level physics, having a solid foundation in math is required to even glance at most of the experimental, and some of the theoretical fields, of physics such as special relativity, nuclear physics, particle physics, string theory, quantum mechanics/physics and so on.

You can interpret it both ways. There's a book by Mark Levi with the title "The Mathematical Mechanic", where, instead of solving physics problems with mathematics, he solves mathematics problems with physical intuition.

Both fields are closely intertwined. I only study physics, but I definitely noticed a lot of mathematical rigour being skipped for utility's sake. It's definitely not as bad as some engineering lectures, but it kind of bothers me.

I'm assuming both fields look very intimidating to an outsider. Difficulty is obviously subjective, but I think it's safe to say that they're both in their own league. Some people are better at maths than they are at physics, and vice versa. Problems in mathematics are abstract and not bound to real-world constraints, which can be both an advantage and a disadvantage, depending on the problem.

>> No.12218773

>>12217342
I think physics is harder. With math you can more or less let your imagination run wild as long as you comply with a few axioms. With physics you still have to comply with the same axioms as math, except now you also have a new set of constraints imposed on you by nature, and nature doesn't tell you what those constraints are explicitly, you have to figure it out yourself.

you'll have to take beyond first year physics subjects to understand that physics is truly hard. there are problems in physics that makes mathematicians scratch their heads and end up becoming too obsessed with trying to solve with it.

Physics studies only two things: matter and energy. Of course, as with many other disciplines (music comes to mind) the further you explore, the more complicated the details become.
Mathematics studies many things, which are often infinite in breadth, depth, and scope. No other discipline studies infinities of infinities, for example.
I have degrees in both, and in my opinion, Mathematics is harder.

Physics is considered harder than Biology due to the heavy math involved in the subject. The amount of math and the complexity of the math determines the complexity of the subject. Therefore, it should be obvious that math is more difficult than physics since it is math, which determines the sciences difficulty.

Math only deals with arrays of numbers. All numbers can be encoded as arrays of numbers and all math can be encoded as a manipulation of arrays of numbers.
Physics also deals with arrays of numbers, just with different rules.

If you want to have those skills you need to build them up yourself. I am stuck researching new materials and proving theories while the cool kids get to build exciting electronics with my stuff.
