Ammonia is used in explosives manufacturing and before the Haber process was invented, you had to extraxt Ammonia from saltpeter, which was mostly found in south america. The British navy blockaded south america during WWI, restricting the german explosive manufacturing.

The haber process was developed by the germans about half way through the war, but by then it was 2 late
