People with conservative beliefs are on average way smarter than liberals. The perceived majority of scientists being atheists is because being openly Christian is basically painting a crosshair on yourself in modern academia so most say they are agnostic or whatever.

There is no way you can get farther than layman level in physics and still remain a staunch atheist, its simply impossible if you really understand the material.

Honestly, everyone has a different reason.

For some, it was political. 2010-2015 was an awakening for a lot of people - elites became too heavy-handed with social/political propaganda, triggering the phenomenon of reactance.

For myself, it was different. In short, I had a nerve response to an illness that caused my heart to just stop beating for about 30-45 seconds, then restart itself.

One second I was throwing up violently in my kitchen sink, and I felt my blood stop pumping and blanked out. Immediately, I perceived very clearly that I was floating in the sky, with warm air, and a golden light coming in through a huge bank of fluffy white clouds. And I heard singing in some language I didn't know, sounded like a combination of wind chimes, bells or something, and human voices. And just as suddenly, I was watching my 2 year old daughter, standing in her play area, singing a cute nonsense song to her toys alone, looking down at them.

I snapped out of it, and my wife was screaming from the other room for me, my daughter wasn't singing, she was screaming too, and I was flat on my back on my kitchen floor with a mouthful of vomit that I promptly coughed up and spit out.

So, as a rational person, I had to consider the following:

When you black out, you don't dream. There is no dreaming because it isn't REM sleep and there is no blood in your brain. I have been knocked unconscious before and I was out like a light, then suddenly came back to without any interruption from my perspective. Also, my daughter wasn't singing at all, where did that vision come from? It wasn't a memory. And the clouds and singing - it wasn't a vague white light, it was as clear as reality.

Rationally, I can't explain it. Spiritually or religiously, I can.

Smart posters realized that religion was an invention probably greater than the wheel and that it was social glue that made society better. Even in the late 2000's we were already beginning to see what society without God is like and ten years later it is completely unraveling because conservative values are not being upheld.

Everything that religion mandates was there for a reason, all religions are blueprints for successful coherent societies. The repression of homosexuality is the right thing to do because otherwise they destroy the very fabric of society, same with women being sluts, they need to be held down and made to enjoy monogamy, society needs to be ethnically coherent as well all that stuff has already been codified by religion a long time ago. I am one of those people who have very conservative views even though I don't really believe in God.

In 2020 in an ironic twist the most scientific approach to society is to support religion and religious views wherever you can. We are probably too late to avoid a bloodbath, but it won't be our fault and whatever society we raise up after it happens will have some sort of religion built into its very core.

That was just a hypothesis and it was proved by many experiments later.
There were other hypotheses, like that matter is built out of platonic solids, but these were disproved.

Hypothesis is just a possible explanation, theory is a hypothesis proven by experiments.
