While aerosol spread is a possibility (just like with the flu), I doubt it's the primary means of transmission. Measles is a true airborne virus and spreads ridiculously easily. Within household spread of SARS-CoV-2 is only something like 30%, which is much lower than you'd expect if aerosol transmission was common.

A WHO-funded systematic review by Chu et al. (27 June 2020) published in The Lancet found that the usage of face mask could result in a large risk reduction of infection with epidemic-causative betacoronaviruses, in which N95 or similar respirators accounted for a larger risk reduction than disposable surgical or other similar masks.[1] Masks were found to be protective for both healthcare workers and people in communities exposed to infection; evidence supports masking in both healthcare and non-healthcare settings, with no striking differences detected in the effectiveness of masks between the settings.[1] Eye protection (e.g., goggles and face shields) was also associated with a lower risk of infection.[1]

A study by Chan et al. (30 May 2020), using SARS-CoV-2-challenged Syrian hamster models and non-infected hamsters placed in closed units with unidirectional airflow to test the effect of surgical mask partitions, concluded that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted by respiratory droplets or airborne droplet nuclei and that such transmission could be reduced by usage of surgical masks, especially when worn by infected individuals.[2]

A study surveying families in Beijing, China concluded that the wearing of face masks by infected individuals at home before symptom onset was effective in reducing the risk of spreading the disease to family members, but that it did little to provide additional protection after symptoms start appearing.[3]

Primary research from countries such as Germany and Thailand have shown significant decreases in case rates with widespread mask compliance, without, however, controlling for other measures such as social distancing.[4,5]

There is absolutely nothing in these studies pertaining to the length of time that masks are effective for. You are supposed to apply a new mask every time you touch your face after the initial application. You are also supposed to apply a new mask whenever the current mask becomes damp. I would like to see the same studies conducted for different time intervals. Less than 1% of the population actually follows these guidelines.

Does it really matter? The virus is causing a significant rise in all-cause mortality. Dating back to 1950, the USA has never experienced more than a 1.25% increase in death rate from one year to the next. It's currently at 11% above the previous year. Pneumonia deaths in seven months have quadrupled the annual average.

Masks provide a false sense of security. Unless you're using a disposable mask, disinfecting your hands, not touching your face, and properly disposing and re-applying a new mask every hour or so, the risk of spreading is almost exactly the same as not wearing a mask.

We haven't seen a decline at all in COVID cases since implementing these strategies. Funnily enough, despite us getting 3 times as many cases per day as we were getting in April, the deaths per day has remained the same. It seems like the deaths aren't correlated to the number of cases. Health experts have already admitted that anyone who dies with COVID, regardless of cause of death, will be counted as a COVID death. George Floyd is considered a COVID death.

"It is also worth pointing out that although Norway and Denmark have not yet posted their GDP results for the second quarter, they are expected to see a yearly 3.5 and 4.1 percent drop, respectively, at the end of 2020, which would be better than the six percent GDP drop the Swedish government has previously predicted. Yes, because that's when the pandemic happened that we have data from.
How else are you going to assess the economic impact of COVID responses than compare otherwise similar countries with different responses to COVID?
It's significant that Sweden has by far the worst economic impact out of all major. It's almost as if their, uh, 'unique' response of just allowing the epidemic to burn its way through the population harmed the economy just as much as it's harmed the people it's killed, the people its bereaved and the people its injured.
Honestly just fuck off you disingenuous piece of shit. Sweden's response is tantamount to a crime against humanity, and it's done the exact opposite of saving the economy.

>> No.12091771

>>12090681
So no evidence of actual spread through aerosols, just that it may be possible under some circumstances. Medical "masks" would not prevent aerosol spread, as mentioned in the next paragraph, only a respirator would be protective. In the next paragraph, droplet and fomite transmission is more likely.

>Recent clinical reports of health workers exposed to COVID-19 index cases, not in the presence of aerosol-generating procedures,
found no nosocomial transmission when contact and droplet precautions were appropriately used, including the wearing of medical
masks as a component of the personal protective equipment (PPE). (38, 39) These observations suggest that aerosol transmission
did not occur in this context. Further studies are needed to determine whether it is possible to detect viable SARS-CoV-2 in air
samples from settings where no procedures that generate aerosols are performed and what role aerosols might play in transmission.

>Outside of medical facilities, some outbreak reports related to indoor crowded spaces (40) have suggested the possibility of aerosol
transmission, combined with droplet transmission, for example, during choir practice (7), in restaurants (41) or in fitness classes.(42)
In these events, short-range aerosol transmission, particularly in specific indoor locations, such as crowded and inadequately
ventilated spaces over a prolonged period of time with infected persons cannot be ruled out. However, the detailed investigations of
these clusters suggest that droplet and fomite transmission could also explain human-to-human transmission within these clusters.
Further, the close contact environments of these clusters may have facilitated transmission from a small number of cases to many
other people (e.g., superspreading event), especially if hand hygiene was not performed and masks were not used when physical
distancing was not maintained.(43)
