Definition:
Moral: concerned with principles of right and wrong or conforming to standards of behavior and character based on those principles

Law: the collection of rules imposed by authority

Christians believe what is right and wrong depends on what god says, this is LAW

Atheist believe right and wrong depends on social norms and the benefit of people, this is MORALS

Therefore Christians have no morality.

>> No.1207809

Christians have way more morality, just look at the pope and the vatican, they save people alle the fucking time! gtfo

>> No.1207818

>>1207809

Nope, Christians only believe something is right or wrong if there is punishment involved.

Atheist need to threats in order to tell whats right and wrong.

Atheists follow the law and social standards. The threat involved is prosecution and alienation

atheists have no souls thus they aren't moral creatures, your argument is flawed

>> No.1207850

>Atheists follow the law and social standards. The threat involved is prosecution and alienation

True, everyone does. But to truely be moral, one must be able to say something is Right or Wrong without any threat of punishment, religious people cant do this, they dont understand morality, they only know law.

> Right or Wrong

This raises another point, religious believe in natural law, an unchanging set of moral principles. Non-religious people mostly believe in positive law, law enacted by a legitimate authority

>> No.1207882

If you grant that God exists and is omnipotent, as Christianity suggests, then whatever he sets down as law he automagically sets as the gold standard for morality, anyway. So it's a good thing that God doesn't exist and OP is debating a complete non-subject.

>> No.1207883

> Non-religious people mostly believe in positive law, law enacted by a legitimate authority

Very true, and also, Non-religious people have morals, which they treat as distinct from law.

>> No.1207894

> then whatever he sets down as law he automagically sets as the gold standard for morality

God can say whatever he wants, if he says something evil, like stone someone to death for picking up sticks, then it is evil, divine or not.

And what is the source of those morals? What they've been taught? The prevalent social norms?

>> No.1207908

>Wrong.

Only if you admit that god is not the source of morality, merely an enforcer.

But that is not what Christians believe.

>> No.1207924

>>1207901

Evolution is the source! Its entirely possible for an entire population to believe that something we would consider horrible and immoral, to be moral.

It all must stem from a common perception we share, and that is Pain and Suffering is bad.

Yeah, dont believe in jesus and spend eternity in a lake of fire. HA! jesus taught LAW not MORALITY.

not OP here

I see what you're saying.

Everyone is "moral", it's just some use fabricated additional laws because they are followed by their equals & appear to make sense. No sane person is only detered from murder by the prison sentence for it, and likewise no one is "good" for not doing it because of the law

tl;dr regardless of religion people are moral

>> No.1207979

>regardless of religion people are moral

Yeah, my real point of this post, is I get anoyyed when people say atheist have no morals because they have no fear of hell.

Thats complete bull, if you require a feel of hell to do the right thing, then you are not a moral person.

Thus, only atheist can truely be moral.

>> No.1207989

>>1207956

jesus pbuh said that there is a god and unto him you will return on the day of judgement.....law and morality aswell.

but of course they have morals. that's because they grew up in christian society, absorbing the teaching of Jesus

Jesus hardly mentioned hell. Hell barely comes into the bible at all.

>> No.1208017

>grew up in christian society, absorbing the teaching of Jesus

You mean they grew up being taught that if you didn't have a fear of hell, then you would be an evil person. Nope, thats not morals, its law.

>> No.1208027

>>1207979
agreed.
Now, let's stop this unpleasant religious dispute and do some science

>> No.1208033

>Jesus hardly mentioned hell. Hell barely comes into the bible at all.

The idea of hell didn't even exist till Jesus showed up. Doesn't matter if it doesnt say it much, jesus brought hell, jesus killed morality.

>> No.1208058

Your logic fails on the premise that you consider all laws moral.

Thus, by your logic one would have been amoral for opposing the Nuremberg Laws, Jim Crow Laws, Apartheid etc.

>> No.1208073

>Your logic fails on the premise that you consider all laws moral.

Exact opposite, the whole argument stems from the Idea that Law and Morality are completely different concepts. While both serve similar purposes, their origin is completely different.
