The police were refusing to respond to calls in the area being looted due to the violence. He retreated and called the cops after shooting the first assailant to report that he had killed a guy in self-defense, after which he tripped and was attacked on the ground by the next 2 assailants. After getting up, he walked up to the riot police holding the perimeter of the area and turned himself in. It's not clear why they didn't arrest him then, but he was told to just go home. The next morning, he was charged and designated as a fugitive, despite doing everything right. It's unlikely he'll be convicted for anything but misdemeanor firearms possession as a minor if it goes to trial.

Rioters from from Milwaukee and Chicago had been burning down and looting a number of local businesses in the town the previous night, and the police weren't stopping them out of fear of escalating the riots, so the locals came out to defend their property themselves. The kid was from a town 15 minutes away in Illinois, and may or may not have worked at the car dealership he was defending.

Selfishness and preservation. When one assumes the universe favors their perspective of reality they also assume said universe favors their perspective of morality. Those who violate one's assumptions of the universe are considered disruptors and manifest as "villains" to them. The elements and individuals who inturn fortify the universe are considered reconcilers and manifest as "heroes". But to be a hero, one must first become selfish in order to consider what is a disruptor or reconciler.

Afterwards one then decides the best way to maximize preservation of the reconcilers of said universe. Then minimize preservation of the disruptors. Through various actions both violent and non-violent this is achieve. And because one typically views themself as a reconciler to the assumed universe. They thus place their preservation as paramount not only for themself but for the sake of others.

Doesn’t matter why he was there when every action he took was a response to being attacked. The first guy that was shot (a convicted child rapist) initiated the conflict by running up to him. He then chased Kyle as he tried to run away. Once cornered, the man grabbed his gun, trying to take it for himself. That’s when Kyle shot him. The other 2 shootings were clear cut self-defense, as they assaulted him on the ground after he tripped while running to turn himself in to the police.
