>The word "laser" is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." The technology turns atomic particles into light with enough radiation to damage an object it encounters.

Newspapers should just hire people with science backgrounds and train them in journalism instead of the other way around

Basically, it excites atoms who then emit photons. These photons bounce off the inner walls of the laser until they can escape through a partially transparent mirror. By this point, the light will have been amplified significantly, resulting in a high-energy beam. Also, all photons go in the same direction, because there's only one direction they can go to escape the tube.

Magnetic fields direct light in a laserly fashion.

Oh, also, because the photons emitted all come from atoms with the same amounts of energy, they'll all have the same energy and thus the same wavelength and colour.

Don't give light too much radiation! It'll create a black hole just like will happen at the LHC!

So how do I restrict the light of the laser to say one meter so I can have a cool light saber?

Have a think cylinder of transparent material around where the laser beam will go, and put a mirror at the end of that. Then it at least sort of looks like a lightsaber...

I always assumed that a light saber would be made of plasma.

Magnets to hold plasma in place...

could i use a tesle like idea to create an invisible electromagnet in a hollow tube around plasma to make lightsabre?

>> No.1205398

I say we have the electromagnet in the handle, and then the magnetic field is controlled and modified to try and keep the plasma in the right shape.
