Is a network engineer really an 'engineer'? I feel like an imposter with this title. You don't have to do any math beyond subnetting...

What math is involved with subnetting? Is that like a bitmask thing?
But yeah, network "engineers" and most software "engineers" aren't really engineers

Don't get me wrong, I do projects for enterprise (petroleum industry, rigs mostly, with radio frequency telecoms) which can be tricky but it's... nah it doesn't feel like I earned that title.

Actual software engineers do deserve that title. I am talking about the ones who actually design, manage and implement complex projects. Not the self titled web niggers who think they are software engineers just because they completed a shitty bootcamp

>> No.12009437

>>12009362
I agree, there are definitely software engineers that deserve the title, although they are naturally massively outnumbered by webdevs and codemonkeys (because real software engineering requires more iq)

>>12009253
lmao MOST engineers dont do math besides your standard algebra and plug and chug into a formula.

The ones who actually really do math in engineering are the ones that are doing simulations. Even then, they are most likely just tweaking FEM models or designing them.

Literally all engineering is easy as shit. You're genuinely more impactful and probably make more money than some retarded mech e for instance.

>> No.12009502

I'm a "security engineer". I build security systems and integrate components that don't fit together with scripts and shit to make more secure environments and CI/CD pipelines. I also do a lot of manual testing for security bugs using intercept proxies or custom python scripts when I am bored. Or fuck around in prod servers to look at how retarded devops set up their servers..

Don't care what the title is since I get paid as much as a C level exec (minus bonuses) for my large swath of knowledge and practical ability.

Some jobs want a degree and some dont. I've interviewed a few potential peers who claim to have Masters in Cybersecurity but each of them had no practical knowledge. They typically do well on the knowledge portion but they dont well on our technical challenges which consists of hacking into a few boxes and/or exploiting a flaw in a webapp, binary application, or server configuration all while explaining what they are doing and why they are doing it.

I have Masters in Computer science but also have a CCNP, CISSP, and OSCP which are basically mid/high level networking, security policy, and offensive security certs. The knowledge gained from studying for the certifications are typically more valuable than the knowledge learned from a degree because you get no guidance at all like in school.

You always have to stay on top of the newest technology so unless you are willing to constantly learn new frameworks and best practices then you won't really do well.
