I'm 24 - Graduated 2 years now (trained in Ireland as undergrad and graduated at 22) and I fucking hate medicine. The only speciality I can reasonably see myself doing is Radiology but it'll take me about 2-3 years to get onto the training scheme and I can't guarantee I'll even enjoy doing it or if I'll manage to stick it out that long.

Has anyone here quit medicine not long after graduating and gone on to better things? asking for a bit of hope. Only reason I went into it was because my dad was a doctor and when it came time to pick my university courses at 17 I lacked imagination. Medicine is the "most difficult" course to get onto in the country so I liked the idea of the prestige but didn't think it through.

My supervising professor for my intercalated was a doctor who got bored of the shitty aspects of med and up and became a researcher. Other medics have gone on to be businesspeople, astronauts, etc.. Medicine works like every other degree + lets you be a doctor, basically.

I only had interactions with them during my oncology rotation, specifically the radiation oncology rotation so not exactly the info you're looking for but all I can say is that it's super comfy, you work in a team with a doctor and you have to calculate where the radiation beam has to land in the tumor so it won't fuck up the rest of the body (Organs at risk), the dosage of radiation, etc.

I very much enjoyed it, but I can't see myself doing rad/onc in the future, the patient interaction is nearly zero.

Lung collapse isn't surprising in a traumatic injury. The neck fracture is a bit hard to assess without knowing the patient's neurological status. Some people can have really fucked up fractures of their vertebrae and still come out relatively ok as long as neural tissue isn't damaged (although recovery tends to be long).

It'd all really depend on current status of this guy. Is he awake or comatose? Intubated or breathing on his own?

I feel a pressure/burning sensation in the left side of my chest when I take ritalin and/or get stressed out. I had it checked out 5 months ago when it was worse (slight stinging sensation) - they took an ECG while I was lying down. I also got an xray of my chest. They didn't detect any problems but I'm not sure if either of those procedures detects heart disease. Did they just not want to check me out properly, or do the two procedures I described actually detect heart disease? My BMI is literally 40, I'm not a hypochondriac and I think I have a level-headed concern but because I'm 24 and autistic maybe they just wanted me to fuck off.

The sensation isn't close to a feeling of being painful (even the stinging 5 months ago didn't hurt), it's just noticeable and worries me out because of coronary heart disease implications. Does it need to hurt a certain amount before it's classified as angina? I can't find any information on how much angina hurts online.

I called my doctor and he said to go into A&E again now while I'm experiencing the symptoms. He said to pressure them into giving me an ECG, X-Ray and blood tests (didn't get blood test the last time). But I can't go in until next week at earliest. Any advice? (besides lose weight obviously) Should I try take ritalin and stress myself out the night before going in, to try get my heart to hurt?

Yes almost everything has room for math/data science, there is a dearth of doctors with mathematical ability so there is a lot to do. Split into categories:
Medical tech: radiology, cardiology, surgery
Epidemiology: everything
Clinical trial theory: everything
Modelling: radiology, cardiology, neurology, infectious diseases, pharmacology

Math will not be your full time job unless you actually just do full time research in which case you might as well grind out the PhD. The more interesting thing though is combining clinical experience and research, in which case you juggle whatever quantitative science that's required and clinical medicine.

Any interesting topic you can think of has most likely already been reviewed by a serious team.

It is legitimate to review a subject that was reviewed maybe a couple years ago if there's new evidence in that time, just don't forget to mention them and compare results methods etc.
