I'm 24 - Graduated 2 years now (trained in Ireland as undergrad and graduated at 22) and I fucking hate medicine. The only speciality I can reasonably see myself doing is Radiology but it'll take me about 2-3 years to get onto the training scheme and I can't guarantee I'll even enjoy doing it or if I'll manage to stick it out that long.

Has anyone here quit medicine not long after graduating and gone on to better things? asking for a bit of hope. Only reason I went into it was because my dad was a doctor and when it came time to pick my university courses at 17 I lacked imagination. Medicine is the "most difficult" course to get onto in the country so I liked the idea of the prestige but didn't think it through.

It is a sunny day and you are taking a stroll with your girlfriend when suddenly a very pale man reeking of sunscreen interposes himself between the two of you, grabs her by the hips and speaks thusly over your quiet mumbling:

"A 60 y.o. male treated with carbamazepine (as he suffers from epilepsy) presents fever (38.8ºC), odynophagia, conjunctivitis and brownish cutaneous lessions that extend over a great portion of his body. These lessions are similar to a bullseye in shape and in >30% of them the epidermis is deatached with ease after any soft touch.
It is VERY likely that we are before a case of:

a) Acute urticaria, caused by the pharmacological treatment.
b)Erythema multiforme minor, secondary to drug use.
c)Pharmacological Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

I very much enjoyed it, but I can't see myself doing rad/onc in the future, the patient interaction is nearly zero.

>The chosen one
Nervous, anxious, nuts, jaded, tired... idk what they are but they stand out. They just want this for whatever personal reason. They can be any or none of the groups above, but are distinguished by how they carry themselves and behave. Amongst the sea of tryhards and bookbashers memorising every fact they can, they just sit waiting for their test/interview to start peacefully, maybe just meditating and living in the moment. They will get in.

Honestly just waiting for this. Not gonna happen anytime soon though as UK doctors have internalised the idea that being a doctor is a calling, vocation, do it for the patients etc. which allows them to get screwed over on salary. The velocity of the vehicle is already a bit of a red flag just from my armchair diagnostics, although again I'd ideally want to know a bit more about the impact. The fact that the front friend died on scene is a bit telling though that it was a major impact crash.

Lung collapse isn't surprising in a traumatic injury. The neck fracture is a bit hard to assess without knowing the patient's neurological status. Some people can have really fucked up fractures of their vertebrae and still come out relatively ok as long as neural tissue isn't damaged (although recovery tends to be long).

It'd all really depend on current status of this guy. Is he awake or comatose? Intubated or breathing on his own?

Friend in passenger seat died basically straight away, friend in the back is the one who's currently dealing with lung and spine issues. That isn't that bad assuming it's just the transverse process fractured. The vertebral artery may be damaged but there should be enough blood flow from other places to make up for it unless he has a circle of willis anomaly.

I feel a pressure/burning sensation in the left side of my chest when I take ritalin and/or get stressed out. I had it checked out 5 months ago when it was worse (slight stinging sensation) - they took an ECG while I was lying down. I also got an xray of my chest. They didn't detect any problems but I'm not sure if either of those procedures detects heart disease. Did they just not want to check me out properly, or do the two procedures I described actually detect heart disease? My BMI is literally 40, I'm not a hypochondriac and I think I have a level-headed concern but because I'm 24 and autistic maybe they just wanted me to fuck off.

The sensation isn't close to a feeling of being painful (even the stinging 5 months ago didn't hurt), it's just noticeable and worries me out because of coronary heart disease implications. Does it need to hurt a certain amount before it's classified as angina? I can't find any information on how much angina hurts online.

I called my doctor and he said to go into A&E again now while I'm experiencing the symptoms. He said to pressure them into giving me an ECG, X-Ray and blood tests (didn't get blood test the last time). But I can't go in until next week at earliest. Any advice? (besides lose weight obviously) Should I try take ritalin and stress myself out the night before going in, to try get my heart to hurt?

Is there any hope that in the coming decades treatments could be discovered for reducing arterial plaque, instead of just minimizing further damage? Could any of this be reversible, or is the nature of arterial plaque too awkward for there ever to be a solution?

Problem with any kind of invasive prosthetics is that they wear and tear after a while and unlike living tissues, they can't repair themselves.
That means that every 10 or so years, sometimes less, you'll have to undergo surgery to get it substituted, every time with more surgical risks and long term complications.
They are immediate solutions but until we find a way to create self-repairing materials (and efficient ways to power them), the ideal solution will always be cellular regeneration

whats the difference between dating someone for their looks and dating someone for their money? theyre shit to do regardless of which one it is. just dont get hung up how shit life is because girls aren't lining up at age 18. when you hit mid-20s, the balance shifts where guys who worked hard start getting rewarded and fuck its good. its not the be all and end all of life either. after your first root, you'll realise how average it is and that you can do without it, and that realisation makes girls want you even more. best advice I ever got was that virginity is a mindset and once you get rid of it, you'll fuck in no time.

>> No.11955979

Yes almost everything has room for math/data science, there is a dearth of doctors with mathematical ability so there is a lot to do. Split into categories:
Medical tech: radiology, cardiology, surgery
Epidemiology: everything
Clinical trial theory: everything
Modelling: radiology, cardiology, neurology, infectious diseases, pharmacology

Math will not be your full time job unless you actually just do full time research in which case you might as well grind out the PhD. The more interesting thing though is combining clinical experience and research, in which case you juggle whatever quantitative science that's required and clinical medicine.
