post your favorite under appreciated scientist and your reason for why. preferably modern. also shit on others picks if they are crap or pseuds.

i’ll go first. i pick Sidney Coleman because his papers on the quantum vacuum and inflation and wormholes are amazingly well written plus his QFT lectures are the best of all time so far. yet he never got any awards and nobody outside of HEP knows who he is.

Paul Julius Oswald Teichmüller. He was a German mathematician who lived from 1913 to 1943. He worked in complex analysis. Despite being a brilliant up and coming mathematician, he put all that aside to fight for what was right and what he believed in, and died fighting on the eastern front of WWII. I'll admit it's more for this latter reason and more of his non-mathematical accomplishments that make me admire him. petty based desu ngl

Joseph Mengele. In Dachau, physicians from the German air force and from the German Experimental Institution for Aviation conducted high-altitude experiments, using a low-pressure chamber, to determine the maximum altitude from which crews of damaged aircraft could parachute to safety. Scientists there carried out so-called freezing experiments using prisoners to find an effective treatment for hypothermia.

i see you guys read Breitbart. where "antifa" (anti-fascists) are fascists!!!!! projection much? obviously trump, the darling of the breitbart sphere, is basically a fascist. and the people who oppose him and his policies are not only left-wing extremist marxists in their ivory towers raining down postmodernist identity theory on minority mobs. but of course that is what you guys think because /pol/ and breitbart told you.

a short defense of academia for you, just to break up the sarcasm. actually academia is not bad and there is a wide range of thoughts, even in humanities. and in hard sciences i argue the quality is very high in the US. the US shits on asia and the third world in terms of STEM, and europe is basically a second thought compared to US hard science. "decadence" is not a thing when hard sciences need to accord to the reality of empirical evidence.

i suspect you guys are just undereducated country bumpkins who get all angry when you ride through the trendy university towns and see "progressive" people and symbols. While in his twenties and early thirties, von Braun worked in Nazi Germany's rocket development program. He helped design and develop the V-2 rocket at Peenemünde during World War II. Though a member of the SS, following the war he was secretly moved to the United States, along with about 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians, as part of Operation Paperclip. He worked for the United States Army on an intermediate-range ballistic missile program, and he developed the rockets that launched the United States' first space satellite Explorer 1.

In 1960, his group was assimilated into NASA, where he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center and as the chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.

The recent years and the lefty political circus has made me swing much further to the right on the pendulum and I've never watched a day of Fox News in my life. Stanley Mandelstam: This guy is certainly the greatest living physicist, although he is very old. In 1957, he discovered the double-dispersion relations, and essentially refounded S-matrix theory, which was proposed by Heisenberg in 1941, but lay dormant for nearly 20 years. This theory became string theory, after many twists and turns, and Mandelstam is the original formulator of 2-d conformal fields, fermionic correlation functions, string field theory, and the arguments for finiteness of string perturbation theory which convinced the world that the theory had no ultraviolet divergences. He also made pioneering contributions to field theory, and really, he deserves a major overdue Nobel Prize, but he'll never get it.

Why was he underrecognized? He was too advanced for people to understand.

>Hovind expands upon the early-20th-century vapor canopy concept of a protective shield that made Earth a relative paradise between the expulsion from Paradise and Noah's flood.[50] The flood is expressed as a function of natural rather than miraculous processes.[51] Noah's family and two of every kind of animal[52] (including dinosaurs, which fit because babies were taken aboard and conditions allowed larger humans, making the ark's size, based on cubits, larger[53]) boarded Noah's Ark before an ice meteor impacted the Earth. Fragments from the meteor caused planetary rings and impact craters on the moon and other solar system bodies.[54] The remainder were drawn to the North and South Poles by the Earth's magnetic field as cataclysmic snowfall which buried the mammoths standing up.[46][54] The ice on the poles cracked the Earth's crust, releasing the "fountains of the deep". According to Hovind, these events caused an ice age, and made the Earth wobble around, collapsing the vapor canopy that protected it.[55]

>In the next few months of the flood, the dead animals and plants were buried, and became oil, coal, and fossils.[56] The last months of the flood included geological instability, when the plates shifted, forming ocean basins and mountain ranges. The Grand Canyon was formed in a couple of weeks during this time.[49]
