I think the problem with using a planetoid flag is that we don't represent this planet, we represent ourselves. Wherever we happen to go in the universe we only have ourselves.

We obviously can't use a nation. Using a symbol from mathematics would not really be representative of us, it's just a very very small piece of rudimentary knowledge we have.

I think the best way to think about this, is to think about what symbol OTHER sentient life forms would pick to represent themselves. Maybe they are methane-based life and have the atomic structure of methane on their flag. Maybe they have horizontally symmetrical heads much like Earth animals and use an outline of that (or the skeleton of it).

We could do those. We could put the structure for carbon. We could use an outline of a skull.

Trying to think of an "idea" that sums up humanity, simply leaves way too much out. Then trying to make a simple diagram representation of that idea, just makes it confusing and allows easy misinterpretation.

It's not like a nation flag where you need to find a symbol that differentiates otherwise very similar humans. If this is a flag to show to bears and snakes and shit, then maybe the key difference is "brain" or someshit. If this is a flag to show to aliens, then what differentiates us from them? That we live on a planet??? That we live on Earth, maybe. That we think, or have math? -- I think if aliens are admiring our flag, they probably have both.

But we probably look different from anything non-human.

In this case I think we might want to relate to them, rather than distinguish ourselves from them.

I thought about it and this is a prototype idea for "about humanity". I'll go over it in detail. Any interstellar race would be able to discern this by studying it.

The existance of the flag tells them we have vision. The shape of the flag--a rectangle-- tells them that we have stereoscopic vision.

The three primary colors of visible light are listed in order, and with a shape that corresponds to their wavelengths. Red is longer and blue is shorter. Combined with black and white, they now know all the colors we need in order to communicate. Even if the aliens can't see "red" as red, they can use a spectrometer to measure the wavelengths of each one and they will fit exactly within 'red', 'green', 'blue'.

Next we have a circle. This shows them that we understand the properties of a circle, namely the constant PI. The inscribed pentagram also shows that we understand another constant, the growth of life on our planet: PHI. We know that things grow proportional to themselves. And if they're perceptive and intuitive, this will hint at our knowledge of evolution.

Lastly we have a Möbius strip inscribed in the center of the star. Any species looking at this symbol can tell that it means to go on forever. Each species will have created a Möbius strip and understand its properties. It shows that we can cope with infinity, a concept beyond that of rudimentary civilizations.

White means it has absorbed no light. It is reflecting all other colors back. So when you see it, you actually see all the other colors. I explained why it doesn't look good.

Vibrant colors, such as the 3 primaries, have a contrast index on opposite sides of a triangle. In this instance, they are pinned at 253, 244, and 237 (RGB respectively). That's almost dead opposite contrast. White blends every color because, when reflected, it contains every color. Therefore it has a contrast index of 0 and causes the mean contrast of any series to fall greatly. Black has a contrast index of 255 relative to this series and so it allows the colors to be distinguished better.
