In a polygamous (or polyamorous) society individuals are more likely to be related because far fewer males are contributing to the gene pool. Not only that, but "alpha" nature isn't hereditary so it's a moot point. Look at nearly any kingdom or empire to prove that point. If and "Alpha" has a son the kid may inherit his good looks, but there is no guarantee that will be the case. And intelligence and personality can be wildly different.

I'm no expert by any means but if I had to guess monogamy probably produces a "neutral" eugenic effect, in that the number of low to high tier people stays the same, while a polygamous or polyamorous society tends to be lower and lower in "quality" of genes, but does promote successful physical traits over others, while monogamy doesn't really adapt new physical traits at all.
