/med/ why the fuck would anyone ever want to go to school to be a doctor?
>4 years pre-med
>4 years of med-school
>3 years of being an absolutely retarded, incompetent, resident.
>Fellowship or extended residency if you want to do anything other than Family medicine.
>Get paid shit money throughout residency
>Work 60+ hours a week in residency and literally waste away the entirety of your 20s and most likely the begining of your 30s.
>Start making money when you’re 30, but who fuckin cares because you’re already old as fuck.

OR
>Be a PA
>After high-school go to a college with a 3+2 program.
>Graduate PA school when you’re 23
>Only have $80k in debt, but who cares because you’re 23 and you start off making $95k+ per year.
>All of the female residents and nurses are easy as fuck because all the male doctors look like total dweebs, so you get to pick whatever girl in the hospital you want to fuck.
>You’re 6 years younger than the youngest attendings.
>You’re a man, so all the patients assume you are the Dr. anyways. No one ever questions you because you’re a man.

God I fucking love being a male Physician Assistant.

It would be significantly better if you could first become a PA and then get the M.D after a few years later if you choose to pursue it. Like the dude is already 2 years in school, let him be a doctor if he already made it this far. If not, just let him be a PA. With that way, at least the time in med school isn't wasted because they would at least be a PA after 2+3 years.

I have been a PA in cardiology for 4 years. I always offer people to help them read them in the hospital, but interns are fucking hopeless. They won’t learn anything because “he he you’re a midlevel ha ha funni.” Once an EM resident’s attending told him to ask me how to read ekgs and the resident refused and he got his ass chewed out right in front of me. It was fucking hilarious.
I don’t think people realize that a PA in a specific specialty (like cardio) will know more about that specific specialty than a resident, or even a real doctor in a different specialty would. And yes, residents are not real doctors.

Well, considering that you're young, I'd also go with hemorrhoid. A polyp that's bleeding is a bit of a "yikes" in my book. It's normal to be "fresh blood" since it's located perianal and defecating will easily make it bleed.

Cope harder faggots. MDs get one more year of clinical training than PAs do and think it makes them gods. Interns can’t even wipe their own ass half of the time. But it doesn’t matter. NPs have full practice authority in many states already. The PA name will change from “Physician assistant” to “Physician associate” within the next two years and they will get the same practice authority. In 20 years, American doctors will be nothing but Admins in corporate run hospitals, and I fucking love it.

You’re just made because the guy that bullied you in high school probably became a PA and is now going to take your job.

While being a male PA is cool, being a male nurse is way better. You sit at the nurses station all day, listening to them gossip and bitch about one another when they’re not around. Lemme guess, Med student, or still pre-med.

Modern doctors are slaves to the corporate medical system. If you are in the US and you work in any field other than Family practice (which is the biggest cope specialty for DOs that couldn’t match to anything better for residency) you are a slave to the hospital Admins and CEOs. Sure you make 200-400k per year, but you slave away for 60+ hours a week and then have call days while they sit in a chair all day and rake in multiple millions. Sure you can act smug around the RNs, sure you can act like you’re better than everyone else, but you’re the real clown.

????

What about people that want to practice it in the first place?

Now this sounds like a total cope post. You proved nothing with it, MDs are still above you and will boss your around, no matter what. It wasn't about CEOs or Admins vs MDs, you know which one was the subject, mr. Physician Assistant. They still make more, comfier lifestyle, don't deal with that many patients, etc.

>> No.11887816

Family practice is a cope, that is no one’s first pick of specialty and if you are in that field, then you are lying to yourself.
Also, i’m not the PA guy, fucking retard.

I have an admin position in a hospital. The MDs are literally my bitch. I make like the same amount they do, if not more. The PA girls are all pretty nice, but they are kinda in with the nurses union so I can’t do much with them, but sometimes the docs that act like real assholes with a superiority complex will get an email, saying they need to work the night before they start their week of vacation and shit like that just so I can fuck with them.

But now, after 24 hours from surgery, it's swollen and I have no idea how much it takes for the swelling to go away, I didn't ask him that, he just told me what to NOT do in the meantime (smoking, drinking soda or hot beverages, don't exercise, etc). NPs need to get a nursing degree first, which makes them an RN. NP schools are largely online and extremely easy to get into (near 100% acceptance rates). They only have 600 clinical hours of training.

They are basically PAs that don’t have as much training. PAs need to have over 1200 hours of clinical training to graduate. Both PAs and NPs can prescribe meds, and depending on the state, neither of the actually need to work under the supervision of a doctor. In certain states NPs and PAs can literally run an ER or an urgent care on their own without any in-person supervision (but an MD will always “supervise” them over the phone). So if you don’t know what to do, you call the MD and if he doesn’t know what to do, he will be the one that gets sued in malpractice because you consulted him. It’s pretty based. Sometimes you can do the same with a resident.
After high school I enrolled in a 3+2 PA program. Pretty much allows me to practice medicine at the same level as a doctor, without actually having an MD degree or any of the liability that comes along in malpractice lawsuits. I work in cardio, so I am always “supervised” by an attending physician, but I see him in the morning and that’s pretty much it. In the rare occasion I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with someone, I’ll page him. Usually he doesn’t know what the fuck is going on either at this point, but since I consulted him, he gets all the blame if we fuck it up. Same would happen if I was an NP. Making $100k at 23 years old is based. But NPs need 4 years of undergrad instead of 3 like certain PA programs do.

Your pharmacist mixed up IBD with IBS, but he/she was still wrong nonetheless because you can develop IBD during adulthood too.

Describe me your stools besides irregular. Are they more light colored than normal? Are they the same consistency as before? (Like do you shit a sausage shaped poop or something more like a paste?)

Hypothyroidism at 22, are you a femanon by any chance? Is it Hashimoto's? When were you diagnosed with it?

A worse function of the thyroid can indeed produce symptoms of IBS because thyroid hormones act on the digestive system.

Liverpool- Not too much to do but lovely people and the hospitals are all decent, nightlife is good (I trained there)
Leeds- Probably the nicest one, got northyorkshire countryside on your doorstep
Sheffield- bit grim but lovely peak district just next door and well connect
Newcastle- Friendliest people in the UK, gateshead is nice
York-Small and boring but comfy small city
Hull- Much nicer than people think, no one really there though
Whole of Lancashire-Shitholes, avoid

Scotland is nice but very cold and rainy. Northern Ireland is just full of farmers and republican traitors. Wales is alright in places (Aberystwyth, suburbs of Cardiff)

Reduce them to strays
Clean their cuts and scrapes

Mercy we abstain
Hope you’re entertained

Taught them with solace
They know a soft caress
To lower your defense

Hide all that you could
Done for the greater good

results for finals are a week away here.
because I barely studied first semester this year, even tho I summoned my inner Dr House for second semester, I still might fail by 1% in the overall score
This would mean I'd have to redo some exams just to make sure I pass and all of this while being in the summer training period.

This year has been very taxing on me physically and mentally especially. Me and my gf broke up. I fell into depression thinking I chose the wrong career path. My friend group was centered around my ex so for a while I thought I no longer had friends. Overall a shit year and all I want in life right now for it to be over. I'm way better mentally and I solved all those issues but I just want to see my name on the passed list as a confirmation that this nightmare is over.
so anyway this is why i'm stressed

Yep, this shit is common here too. That's why I hate the hospital life and I'd rather get a FM office or a peds private practice instead. They're usually the commie doctors that are already old as fuck and want to practice until 90 or something like that. Some experience outside will do wonders from what I've heard from other residents/attendings and who knows? If they see you're determined and work hard, they might even offer you a job.

Can't wait for my 6th year to start and see how it will be with all the corona-chan situation. Probably, for us, it will be online again since we're not allowed in the ID ward and ICU but I've got plenty of other specs to go trough too.

>> No.11903670

>>11903637
online was fucked up for me. I’m glad i only got one semester of that shit and now i’m out and don’t have to. i would go crazy if i had to go another year online like that. specially last year it is all clinical subjects, and i enjoyed even little hospital practice and exposure we had before corona hit. I don’t think next wave will be big deal though so maybe only first semester of next year will be online for you. though it probably depends on epidsituation of your country. here we only got 995 cases and 15 dead so other than masks it does not feel like anythings really going on here rn.

Here it get worse. Oscillates from 400 to 600 daily. Eastern romanians are the dumbest creatures that exist, I swear. They all deny corona-chan, don't want treatment because "I won't let you experiment on me!! let me go home", then come back the next day in a coma directly to the ICU, they even held protests lmao.

The past year, before corona-chan hit I was on peds and surg peds wards, the rest of them (neuro, nephro, GI, etc) no experience at all. I wish I could get some in the 6th year but it all depends on my uni.

Online was pretty cool, I kinda liked the lectures. Comfy in PJs, coffee, taking notes casually but the no clinical experience sucked. Hard.

You don't even need to be a doctor in order to do that, what the fuck lmao.

When it comes to emergency med, especially ambu time, think about it like this: Are you able to do that for the rest of your life?

Most of EM physicians get burned out, yes the program is flexible and it's based on a shift schedule but it's a pain in the ass when it comes to polytrauma and they need you in the ER at 3am on your day off.

I think you can volunteer in your free time at the department (Hell, even in my shithole it's possible to do that after taking a few optional courses) and see from there.

There's your answer, my man. Just do whatever attracts you the most. Finnbro can give you better advice, he's an ER doc after all.

Rheumatology sounds pretty chill. Just give prednisone/dexamethasone or any other corticosteroid to the patient and you're all set.

clinical lab if that's a possibility, I had a lab head who was taught history full time at the university because he had so much free time

em is a fairly new spec here, hence most of the pre hospital dudes are still anesthesiologists but it's a pretty shitty job
>money is not good
>time is not good
>nobody gives a flying fuck about what you do
>most of your time still goes towards stuff that really doesn't even warrant an ambulance or you just play pool with your balls in the base waiting for a call

er is okay on the other hand
>fast paced if you like that
>varied
>everyone comes to you through triage so they actually need treatment
>well staffed and good resources
>plenty of mall cops to beat the junkies
>shit actually ends when your shift ends

I personally like the time pressure and the large scope of it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Hilleman
>Maurice Ralph Hilleman (August 30, 1919 – April 11, 2005) was an American microbiologist who specialized in vaccinology and developed over 40 vaccines, an unparalleled record of productivity. Of the 14 vaccines routinely recommended in current vaccine schedules, he developed eight: those for measles, mumps, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, chickenpox, meningitis, pneumonia and Haemophilus influenzae bacteria. He also played a role in the discovery of the cold-producing adenoviruses, the hepatitis viruses, and the potentially cancer-causing virus SV40.
I prefer this guy.

Wait, aren't ER docs supposed to be happy when they don't receive calls and have plenty of free time during the shift?

Also
>everyone comes through triage so they actually need treatment
Don't you guys have babushka's that come in for a 2/10 headache there? This kind of shit fills our ERs most of the times and other minor stuff.

American healthcare.
No. In most European countries it's as described. You are in a so called " Shock room".

Maybe a dumb question, but after an intense cardio session today I took off my shirt and noticed my stomach beating. I normally don't take off my shirt until I go to take a shower, and the beating had subsided by then. Ik the aorta runs through there, and the beat is visible on thin people while lying flat, but is it normal after cardio? thanks in advance.

After 4 years of undergrad getting a Biology degree and getting pre-medical experiences, and one year working a crappy medical scribe job, I am all ready to apply to medical schools...and I realized now I don't want to. I want a job that gives me a high-pay, while also not having to work terrible hours. I think I would enjoy something involving engineering, but I'm not sure.

I've spent my whole college in Biology (which I dislike) and being pre-med. How do I completely change trajectories to do something else, without redo-ing my college? What is the most optimal path to a six-figure career?

>/med/ why the fuck would anyone ever want to go to school to be a doctor?
Studies are interesting and so is job.

All of the shit in green-text is relevant only 'big-muneyh' fags. There's shit-ton of others things to do if you are mainly interested in annual salary.

The actual reasons NOT to go /med/:
>'we are heroes' mentality among your peers
>politics/cliques at hospital
>muh pecking order
>nepotism

Have to disagree about the heroism. Everyone gets disillusioned real quick, at least in a shithole like mine.

Real advice, drop the 'I'm older than you and so smarter' mentality (if you have one of course). Gets real old real quick and people will think you're a massive fag for having such a superiority complex. Hang out with the youngsters once in a while.

Doesn't matter. I have a 32 year old in my year and we're not entering our 6th year so it's very much possible.

As other anons said, don't be afraid to hang out with us, zoomers, it's really fun to have someone older with us.
