What's the possibility that a bunch of tiny meteorites crashed through my roof, landed on my keyboard and typed out this post?

if it was to happen then it would happen so it would be 1=1
so in reality 1=1

it either did or did not

>> No.1186527

1/2

either it did

or it didn't

meteors did that i would have said 1/2

there are trillions of asteroids out there

a better question would be what are the chances of it NOT happening?

>> No.1186564

my god, you people are awful at understanding probability. It's not 1, it's not 1/2.

>> No.1186610

/sci/ counted to 5. Good job.

Well, first we must figure out how many meteorites survive entry into the atmosphere and hit Earth with the force to break through a roof but *not* break the keyboard.

Then we must figure out the odds of some 50 of them happening in the same general area (Earth is pretty big, yo).

Then, we must figure out the odds of each of those keys being in that order, along with the shifts being in the right spot.

Then multiply them together.

Pretty fucking small.

Shift would definitely complicate things, unless a small handful of meteors activated stickykeys first.

WHO ALLOWED THIS?!

>> No.1186722

there is no possibility. it is effectively just as likely as you jumping and failing to return to the earth.

pretty much 0. If it's traveling so fast that it can crash through your roof then it's not going to slow down enough to have just the force of pressing a key. More likely it would punch a hole through your keyboard and break it in half or something.

Additionally you run into the problem that the meteorite must simultaneously be small enough not to destroy your keyboard or block future meteorites from pushing the same keys, and large enough that is cross-section and speed do not combine to overwhelm the strength of the plastic from which the keys are constructed.

There will probably be a size of metorite that will lose most of its kinetic energy in the actual roof of the house such so that it only "Falls" onto the keyboard at a slow speed.
Also metorite metal is quite dense so I expect that a large enough peice to have enough weight to press a key from a ~2m fall wouldnt have to be big.

Shift key is quite big really, If a metorite hit it it would take a second or so to roll off. In which time the corresponding key would have to be pressed.

The real question here is can the probability be displayed as a full number inside the bounds of the universe, how about as sci notation. Krunth up arrow? Conrad's arrow system?
Hell, it might even approach 1/(G64)

Unless you're using your keyboard outside, a meteorite small enough to type (rather than asklgjaewrh) would never reach it. Your roof could stop anything that small, and if you up the hypothetical velocity of the meteorite enough TO penetrate your roof, it would destroy your keyboard anyway.

TL;DR; Original problem must take place outdoors.
