You misunderstand, theoretical and mathematical physicists frequently do purely abstract work but they are studying real physical structures and for the last few centuries nearly all of the well founded models they've conceived of have been verified as valid descriptions of nature through experimental results. That is what distinguishes science from everything else, the mathematics is directly representative of real things in the world that can be detected using the methodology of hypothesis testing, experimentation and statistical analysis that has been standard since the 19th century. You're making the same point you made above, my counter is that these are not real things, predicting whether someone will do something is not explaining how that happens, the physical mechanisms underlying voting behavior, which is itself ill defined and non-physical, its a stand-in for a concept in ecology or behavioral biology which are also very suspect as sciences but at least attempt to deal with the real thing that is occurring rather than pursuing the upper strata of social and philosophical abstractions. The idea of an economy makes no sense from a physical point of view. its not a thing that can be studied, its an idea that can be discussed from different viewpoints which often incorporates data from physical experiments and empirical observations but never explains mechanisms.
