Nah, I study actual combinatorics, not that stupid algorithmic """analysis""" CS-tards push. Literally the only desirable part of the degree can be self taught. Just do an online bootcamp or something, you don't need to dedicate 4 years to learn software engineering.

I doubt you do combinatorics if you think the basic shit in early undergrad is algorithm analysis.
It’s pretty funny since a lot of combinatorial research is done in CS anyway, or in collaboration with math - sedgewick and flajolet’s analytic combinatorics is pretty concrete evidence for how far combinatorial theory can reach in CS

What do math and physics majors do other than being professors and doing research?

>> No.11827683

I respect computer scientists in research and actively work with them. It's the remaining 95% who go straight into industry who I don't respect, half the degree is a massive waste of time.

Even postgraduate CS programs tend to be lacking in mathematical background for real theoretical work. The degree is just narrow.

PhD or masters? There seem to be heavy hitters in CS who end up in the math departments by joint appointment, and of course there are those who have some background from double majoring in math with CS in undergrad.
I was under the impression that people in TCS PhD’s learn whatever mathematics they please in order to write in their desired subfields. Some people do nothing but some basic complexity and some basic algorithms. Other people do quantum hamiltonians or geometric complexity. This is, at least from what I hear, how it goes.

Quant work, R&D at engineering / software research groups, etc..
Are we talking majors or PhD?

Well yeah. Masters programs are typically pajeet tier, data "science" has enslaved most of the CS people in my college. PhDs in theory are in the strict minority.

Masters programs in CS aren’t worth shit, yeah.
So you’re saying PhD’s in theory CS are usually the exception?

>> No.11827733

Depends on your school's prestige, topics like quantum computing usually don't happen at schools >25 standing. PHD enrollment is down really, everybody just does undergrad if they don't double major in math.

Depends on their ability, but usually do postgrad math research. The best filter into theoretical PHDs, worst end up masters CS -> industry.
