The higher you are in the academic food chain, the more independent and self-sufficient you are expected to be as a researcher.
The real problem is that 90% of people doing a BA have zero interest in the academia and are just there for a diploma. Sometimes they realize that they can succeed somewhere else and drop out. This is where that whole "college dropout millionaire" stereotype comes from.
