Imo we shouldn't even be dreaming about going to Mars until we have the Earth-Moon system under control

Yeah but it's theoretically easier to grow plants on mars than the moon and there's more gravity so you don't fly out of the atmosphere everytime you take a step.

It's practically easier to bring food on the moon than to bring plant growing system on mars.

Setting that up is a part of going to Mars

The up front cost and investment will be massive either way, the fact remains that Mars is more useful long (very long) term, that's why it gets the attention. The moon is a waste of time in comparison, a totally arid little rock.

can't have one without the other

We shouldn't even be thinking about space travel at all.

I thought we already did the moon.

Doesnt moon have hellium3 deposits in the rock and other usefull stuff?
Also taking off from moon would be much cheaper and easier, as well as building bigger ships

>we shouldn't try to cast iron before we have tin under control
>we shouldn't explore Africa or Americas before every little stone is mapped in Europe
>we shouldn't even be dreaming about gasoline cars before steam pump is working at 100% efficiency
Give me one reason exploration should go tall rather than wide

Even if we did set up a lunar colony, I've heard some people make the argument that the moon is too important to the earth's and human's survival, and that we basically shouldn't fuck with it just because of that.

Elon said the moon is close to earth and with that, symbiotic. By looking at the past, wars intensities and scale make it dangerously likely, that the next one will affect both Earth and Moon (if colonized) to the point where that could be it. Mars is far enough away, that it won't be memed on, be it war, or a catastrophe.

ok thanks for your opinion

Elon Musk is making a Mars vehicle, Starship, to realize the aim of reaching and developing Mars through cheap and soon access to it, and as a byproduct or additional mission it can also provide cheaper lunar access than anything the moon community were thinking for their own moon aims. The best moon outcomes will result from some crazed Mars guy wanting to go to Mars, and not the other way around of excluding Mars altogether to build expensive systems that deliver paltry lunar access and outcomes that would never live up to any grandiose claim of the moon's pivotal importance.

Considering the Earth as Earth-Moon system is totally based but that's not what the big guys think so...
