Discuss about brain improvement and mind enhancement. We had this thread recently and it hit bump limit, so here it is as a general. Let's make this a thing.
Please post science only, snake oil shit is only allowed if you specifically declare it as such.
We already figured out
> good sleep
> different games such as go, chess, dual-n-back, ...
> microdosing shrooms/LSD (not confirmed)
> meditation, hypnosis and similar
> proper diet, such as
> high fat (but only good fats obviously)
> supplement zinc, magnesium, ... (inb4 copper fag starts shitposting about literal pigs)
> if you accept addiction: adderal, caffeine, nicotine, ...
> not touching your dick [citation needed]
> learning languages (preferably ones that differ from your native one)
> probably something else that I forgot already because I didn't take the time to study memory techniques

One thing I'd like to hear about is how to git good at creative thinking. I can solve stuff when I have a clear objective but I suck at thinking of something creative just for the sake of creativity
Post whatever comes to your mind, let's use our full potential to think of even weirder shitposts.

learning a musical instrument. Probably falls under the same category as learning another language (the language of music)

>Probably falls under the same category as learning another language
I disagree. Both are very useful but in a totally different way. Music is good for pattern recognition and playing an instrument is good for hand eye coordination but language learning is great for shaping your thoughts, your thoughts are on a language and the language is a tool to make them less abstract

>your thoughts are on a language and the language is a tool to make them less abstract

if I think of a melody and then play it on my guitar, am I not using a tool to make my thoughts less abstract? what if I learn music theory to describe a song I hear in my head? Is this not the same thing?

when you learn an instrument you're not just rote memorizing chord shapes and what not, but actually learning to relate the sounds and patterns you hear to what you're actually playing.

It's actually used to treat seizures, since it turns down the brain. Eat sugar. Sugar is brain food.

Don't. Magnesium and copper should be fine unless you take unreasonable amounts, but don't take zinc for no reason.

there's an article on ketamine where one of the effects sounds a lot like rebooting a computer, just wanted to bring it to /sci/'s attention in case i could be useful for rebooting people's brains and getting them out of comas or something, pure speculation, but it would be wonderful if just a reboot would work...

Lemme guess, your first language is French or something closely related? (Spanish, Italian, etc.) I'm bilingual and "J'ai 18 ans" translates to "I am 18 years old" even though "ai" means "have" rather than "am". The change of auxiliary verbs is equally confusing for me having English as my first language, a funny one is we say "I am done" and "I am dead" but in French, "fini" can mean both, so as an anglophone, I often say "J'ai fini" rather than "Je suis fini", the first meaning being dead, rather than the second meaning being done.

>>11786904
Sidenote circling back to the original post: learning extra languages is very good for your brain, and I would guess extra good if you use a lot of verbal thought but want to get better at it or expand beyond it and think on a level above words.

Right, sorry, I forgot to attempt to answer the question.

Just looking at wikipedia, it appears to be at least somewhat dangerous, and I wouldn't be surprised if it caused brain deterioration, but whether or not you should take it depends on whether or not you can deal with your anxiety. Although the medication has negative side effects, the quality of your life would probably be improved by it if your anxiety is so severe that you have trouble functioning in life.

I have been diagnosed with 95th percentile anxiety (higher than 95% of people), OCD, and autism spectrum disorder, but as I've grown up, I've found that I've become more and more capable of overcoming my symptoms, and I've never taken any medication for it.

But I think you should ask yourself this question: Did you feel like your life was getting better or worse before you started the medication? If you feel like your life was getting better, than if I were you, I would view the medication as unnecessary, but if you feel like your life was getting worse, then I think that taking the medication would be a good idea to prevent the possibility of your anxiety spiralling out of control.

Best of luck with your mental health/brain improvement!

As a person that is bilingual and was into music for many years. I think both are valuable, but I do agree that both are very different. I am of the opinion that music is a "language" in the same way that CPU instructions are a "language". There are rules and a grammar. So, yeah, linguistic theory applies, but actually using it doesn't teach you the same things. When I learn new phrases or words in a foreign language (or sometimes when I just speak them), it often causes me to be introspective about their counterparts in my native language, and to think deeper about why they are the way they are.

On the axis away from the observer in opposite direction, lets call it the vector a and b, energy cant escape in a direction from an energy quantum, or energy packet already travel with the speed of light.

From the moment of the existence of any observe, a mirror horizon is created expanding outward with the speed of light. As more energy resources this mirror horizon passes as more energy has to be reflected inward. The energy has to be reflected, cause the energy cant under any circumstances pass this horizon, and energy has to be contained. (thermodynamic)

This doenst represent an problem because the energy can escape with the expanding horizon outward into space. But as soon as the observer (like earth which rotates around the sun) is in motion to any object with in this horizon, the horizon gets contracted in the direction of the movement.

This is where the reflection starts, all energy stored at the mirror horizon, gets now reflected back to the relative position of the observer.

you're 18 and on an antidepressant?

Yes, it will deteriorate your brain. There are a lot of different proven, time-tested methods, to deal with whatever anxiety disorder you've been diagnosed with, and exactly 0 of them will destroy you like an anti-depressant. Better living through modern chemistry keeps you doped up in the slave chair. Drop the pills, bro. I have no idea who you are or what your psychological nonsense is, but I can guarantee you it is nothing compared with the people I work with. Here's some ideas, off the top of my head:

Learn to meditate. Look up "do nothing" meditation with shinzen young. Or just sit down for an hour, and set a timer to ring every ten seconds. Whenever the timer goes beep, consciously pick the most empowering thought you can think of. Congratulations, you just demonstrated to yourself without doubt that you are 100% in control of your thoughts. Chances are, you're just incredibly lazy. Which is okay, most people are. Find an inspirational goal and set yourself to achievable goals in pursuit of it. Find an inspirational teacher or role model, could be in real life, that's best, but youtube works well. Whoever they are, could be spiritual, could be business related, doesn't matter, just make sure there's at least six months of regular content, I'm talking daily, at least 20 minutes a day, and go through the material. Find a friend whom you can set mutual goals with, and hold each other accountable. Do something physically challenging every day. Take up a musical instrument and master it. Do some group physical discipline.Structure your days. Do a dopamine fast, regularly. Eliminate all media and news from your life, entirely. Go camping for two weeks, solo, and don't bring any books, movies, or anything else. For 7 days straight, just sit down and don't move until you actually feel like doing something truly resonant and fun and exciting. If it's a fear related thing, don't do it.

Where focus goes, energy flows. If you focus on separation and suffering, you will generate more. it is endless.

Focus on the right and the true and the beautiful and the exciting and the things that make you feel even the smallest bit happy, and follow the breadcrumb trail of your excitement, and that becomes life for you. A truly fulfilled life of profound meaning naturally results.

It's recommended you do it 20 rounds (~30 minites) each day and 5 days a week. The routine boils down to trying to get a score of 80% or higher for each n and advancing as high as you can go. The first day you might struggle to get past 2back but within a day or so something will "click" in your brain and 2back will seem trivially easy. You'll get a high enough score and the app will advance you to 3back which will seem insanely difficult at first but then just like before something will click and on up you go.

It's literally impossible to raise IQ as an adult, if you wanted to optimize your intelligence you would have needed rich, well educated parents constantly putting a heavy focus on your education while simultaneous providing you with tons of stimulus (toys, vacations etc) as a kid. You could raise your IQ very slightly as a teenager if you started doing maths, learning languages, playing chess, exercise and eating healthy, but it pales in comparison to the brain development you could have achieved as a child.

These threads are made my very naive young adults.

Unironically, the best form of brain maintenance (Not improvement) for an adult is to play videogames regularly. As soon as you turn 50 you can also start smoking pot, but before that age it's detrimental for mental acuity.

If you're 26 your brain has completely stopped developing, and even then past 16 it's very mild, subtle brain development. There's also epitalon-amidate (Not epitalon by itself, the amidate form enters the brain while the regular epitalon only affects the body). The epitalon will lengthen your telomeres essentially making you younger, it may cause cancer but you can eat apricot seeds for the cyanide as a cancer preventative measure. Epitalon is a steroid, if you're under 26 I wouldn't recommend it because your boneplates and eyes are still growing and it may fuck you up.

No. The brain stops 'growing' at the age of 25. at which point you'll lose about 2% of all your brain cells by the time you're 80. The cool thing about human is we have neuro-plasticity which means we can change how our brain is used. Eg, someone goes blinds, and over time the 'hearing' regions of the brain will take over the, now useless, 'seeing' portion of the brain. In this way, we can make our brains more efficient and smarter

I can't imagine this being any good for actually keeping brain function up or improving your Chess skills. Don't you think 15-30 minute games would be better at least? Then you'd have time to at least deliberately walk through each move and try to look for plays down the line 3+ moves ahead.
>5 minutes meditation 3 times a day
Never tried this, but I would always do my meditation in one sitting. Again I'd say the intention is good and it probably helps a bit, but meditating for even 10-15 minutes in one sitting might be better to actually get into a meditative zone and work on your focus.

>> No.11800173

Both of these are pretty much worthless
5 minutes of meditation? that's not meditating that's a shower. 5 minute chess game? You should be taking 5 minutes to make a move if you're actually trying to use your brain. Maybe this is good mental exercise for someone with crippling ADHD
Try one 45 minute meditation or two 20 minute sessions instead. 45 minutes is better for your concentration and progress of course.

Alright /sci/ what have you done today to make yourself mentally sharp, that is what activity have you done to potentially make yourself a bit smarter or decrease the chances of you developing Alzhimers when you get older?

It is proven that cardiovascular training more particularily aerobic training will increase the flow of oxygenated blood to your brain. The best way to do this is by mild aerobic training like jogging or going for a long walk. Anaerobic or intense prolonged aerobic training causes you to temporarily decrease in blood flowing to your brain as your muscles require it to work during training. However using common sense you can quickly deduce that since this will increase cardio all around, the blood flow to your brain once rested will be a lot better.

Are you reading? Reading improves your memory and your vocuabulary so long as the language used in the book is fairly advanced. It can also aid in critical thinking skills.

Learning a language has the same effects on your brain as reading would, your memory improves, however your logical thinking skills may increase as you start learning how to properly organize the grammars of the language

Are you studying math on your sparetime? Math greatly increases logical thinking and it is a use it or lose it gift so one could assume that the better you are at math the better you are at remembering things.

If you study science and start viewing the world in a more rigid, unbiased way according to the scientific view of the world, your critical thinking skills will improve. Both /pol/ and Tumblr could use some of this.

Strength training strangely enough has mind boosting benefits to it as well, appearantly old people who lift are less likely to develop alzhimers. You may also feel quite a lot sharper after a nice, solid session, which may have to do with the cocktail of hormones your body produces during resistance training.

A simple guideline for the modern man, inspired by renaissance men:

You should divide yourself and your time up into 3 categories.
The mind is your intelligence, and it is what most know as logic, problem solving and analyzing. You want to use your brainpower each day in a practical manner, like solving puzzles, doing sudoku, learning a skill that requires creativity and problem solving skills. This could be anything from computer programming, maths, physics, science of any sort. The key is you must apply the knowledge you gain yourself and do something with it, whether it is writing, building or actively solving puzzles / problems.

The spirit is often less talked about on /sci/, but is equally important for a complete man. This is philosophy, Literature, meditation and study of one's own mind and purpose. You can view it however you want, some call it their soul, their unconscious, their purpose or their inner drive. Whatever you define it as it can be trained, and your spirit is what enables you to control your mind. Your mind works on solving and analyzing external problems, while your spirit or resolve works on solving and analyzing internal problems. You must be aware of yourself and your habits, to fully control yourself and not only react to external stimuli, but act according to your own long term desires. Read philosophy of all different sorts and ponder over the arguments, read articles of your own political viewpoint and even more in from your opponent's viewpoint. Read without bias and try to understand the arguments presented in all of them, and come to your own conclusions. Realize your own downfalls, habits and dreams and create a long term plan for yourself and find something to work towards. This is the one /fit/izens most often forget, and is especially important for young men. Instead of being angry at the world for your own shortcomings, you should explore everything with an open mind.
Cont. (1/2)

>> No.11800706

>>11800701
And to continue the spirit you should look into meditation. Not in the way of new age mysticism, but as a way to control your own thoughts. Realize that your mind is actively fighting against you, unless you control it. This is why you often lose focus, cant concentrate on important things and start daydreaming in the middle of work. You have no control over your own mind, so it controls you. Simply sit down comfortably, close your eyes for 2 minutes, and just breath through your nose. Each time your mind starts to wander, bring it back. Do not allow it to lose focus, becuase you are losing control and focus. Do 2 minutes each day, and up the time slowly and you will find yourself able to concentrate on tasks involving the mind much more, now that you can close off the "monkey mind" as Buddhist Monks call it.

The body is what we're all here for, and it is not less important than the others, but /fit/izens give it too much importance. Exercise for health and enjoyment. Multiple studies shows how you learn easier and are happier with an active lifestyle than a sedentary one. Do not only exercise one way, but be open to different forms of physical exertion. Take pride in what you achieve and not what others think of it. Admiration from women and other men are good, but those are external stimuli. You want the rare sort of stimuli, that many cannot attain by only training the body: Pride.
You must have pride in your progress, and like the mind you are able to set a physical goal and achieve. Unlike the mind, this doesn't involve logic or critical skills, but it requires discipline. With the spirit and mind, you can analyze, read or ponder over new books or ideas every day. With the body there is little variation, and the only driving force is your commitment to long term results. Everyone wants to look good, but not everyone has the discipline to repeat tasks with seemingly little short term rewards.

>> No.11800712

>>11800706
3/3

And if you set aside 20 - 60 minutes every day to one of these pursuits besides your work and social life, I can guarantee you will become happier. What you spend your time on outside of work and social events is what will define the future you. Video games, movies and tv are fine, but will stagnate you. You will become passive and feel no sense of progress if you only consume, but never create. Stimulate yourself in different ways, set goals and slowly make healthy habits that will make you happy in the long run. Cutting down on consumption of media is especially important in our age, and should be a big focus in your life. Instead of watching 3 hours of Netflix, work on a project, puzzle or read some chapters in a comfy book and ponder over what you read. Then watch Netflix, and have pride in your progress as you soon realize how far you have come since you started.
Don't do any of it for external reasons, as in do not do it only to post on social media, but do it because it genuinely improves your life even though no one knows about it. Solving problems, reading books and doing work builds character and gives you a personality. It gives you internal confidence, and a feeling of security in oneself. You build trust in yourself, because you know what you are capable of, and can control yourself and apply your mind, spirit and body to the external world.

For me, it was exercising, learning a language without any connection with my native one, pick a math/physics/chemistry/philosophy book and when you come in trouble with an exercise, theorem, or concept , try to find the answer by yourself until you have really no clue. See patterns or die in the intention

Read more books

Literally you should carry a book around and read it instead of browsing shit on your phone.

'd like to add that you should start with books that can help you be a better you. Not only will you read them a little more carefully, but it's good practice to get the most out of your reading.

Let's say you have a shitload of bad habits and you want to turn that around, so you pick up Habit by Charles Duhigg. There's going to be good information all around, but all the information won't do you a bit of good until you put it into action. So as you read, make some notes and give yourself actionable steps to implement the advice in the book.

It's like having an encyclopedic knowledge of lifting routines yet never having stepped in the gym. The most valuable knowledge is what you can use to make your life (and those of the people around you) better.

Here's how I've made good gains, both using my intelligence and gaining knowledge.
>learn basic math
>learn basic physics
>learn a second language (literally forces your brain grow and you'll learn about another culture)
>read some entry level philosophy (plato's Republic is a good start)
>learn a bit of history from before 1930 (so basically anything up until the great depression, none it is politically charged).
>understand basic economics and how money developed through history

depending on how large gains you want to make, read books accordingly

>small gains
simple fictional books
>medium gains
somewhat hard to grasp/think about fictional books
>big gains
factual books (non-fiction)
>largest gains
instructional books (like how to code, how to build things etc)

I personally usually read like 10-45 minutes every night right before bed, it also relaxes one so one sleeps better, or falls asleep easier, while making your mind quicker (or at least maintining its speed). If you wanna get into reading in this manner daily I suggest starting with 2 simple books about something you're interested in, so you really want to read and find out more.
I'm currently reading a book on islamic/middle eastern world history, almost finished with it. (Gonna read Horus Heresy books next.)

>learn how to read scientific papers, and the epistemology of science
This should be a no brainer. You need to understand which questions can be answered by science, and you need to know how to interpret the work of others.
>read up on confirmation bias and the Dunning Kruger effect
Part of being a good scientist is recognizing your own biases and trying to keep them out of your work.
>pick a field to specialize in, while keeping yourself fairly well informed about other fields/disciplines
More opportunities are available to people who take a deep dive into the right field, but you don't want to be ignorant of other disciplines.
>git gud at math and statistics
This is the backbone of data analysis and interpreting experimental results.
>attend symposia and other scholarly gatherings and learn from experts
Exposes you to ideas you may never have stumbled upon otherwise.

I figure you're using the +15 second interval things then, I thought you were just playing 5 minutes flat.
>As for meditation, you're probably right. I honestly go shorter because I probably don't have as good self control as I should.
Just try to work yourself up to better times in one sitting I'd say. Go from 5 minutes, to 7 minutes, to 10 minutes, etc. Also, something to note that you might want to try: Back when I would meditate daily I was struggling to hit 25 minute times with a timer. One day though, I tried meditating without a timer and said to myself to just try and hit a point where I feel like quitting then go for just a bit longer, and ended up meditating for 55 minutes straight. So, you might want to try meditating without a timer once or twice, it may end up helping you meditate even longer than you normally would, since you're not trying to hit any goal.

calculus books don't explain the reasoning behind derivative rules, they might just give you some algebraic proof and that's it

they also only explain how to think of them that way, not why the logic holds
take the product rule for example, in his video 3b1b explains you should just think of it as a rectangle and discard the tiny part because "it gets negligibly tiny"

the tiny part gets neglibagley tiny because it is the change in x^2 multiplied by the change in sin(x). the other two parts are the change in sin(x) multiplied by the current value of x^2 and vice versa. as this change becomes smaller and smaller, the tiny part is two of these changes multiplied together while the other parts has only one change being multiplied by a much larger value. as the change gets smaller and smaller, the tiny part becomes more and more insignificant relative to the other parts.

>> No.11805508

>>11805496
yes, that's how he explains it but that argument is invalid
derivatives are defined by limits and as the limit is approached they are both infinitesimally tiny and because of it you can't compare their magnitudes, it doesn't matter how much faster one approaches zero than the other, they're both infinitesimally tiny because we're dealing with an infinite process
limit as x goes to inf of 1/x, 1/x^2, 1/x^3 is exactly the same

>> No.11805565

>>11805508
yes, those limits may be the same but what about x/2x as x approaches infinity? x as x approaches infinity and 2x as x approaches infinity both approach infinity, but when you put them in the same limit you can see the difference. x/2x will always equal 2 no matter what x is, so the limit is 2. perhaps the tiny part devided by the 2 larger parts approaches 0 as x approaches infinity which means that it is nothing in comparison to the two other parts.

In humans, the lowest recommended i.v. dose to induce anaesthesia is 1 mg/kg. Applying the same ratio of minimal anaesthetic dose to highest non-lethal dose to humans implies that doses above 11.3 mg/kg i.v. may be lethal in humans. For a person of 60 kg this is equivalent to i.v. doses above 680 mg.

increasing activity across your neural network is a good way to passively increase functionality. this is partially cram session stuff but you can make it long term memory

so first find your approximate longest span of time to view something / pages absorbed . the average human cant do 30 minutes for instance so a single tv show red lines a person given commercial break time before and after the show starts. then slowly increase the volume of content you absorb. each time you think about something it increases the strength of your neural network across that pathway set

then alternate between subjects when you hit the max time frame or pages for yourself. on average they tell people to do 10 - 15 minutes but thats not hard set and based on averages which the lowest common denominator affects. on subjects your not good at this may be good however

then when your repeating things do it the same way with alternating subjects and time frame. . move on and do the same with other stuff. just 30 minutes a day split between 2 subjects for a month. dont move on to fast cover the same material 3 times just to be sure so 3 days same 2 sections of material. if you were serious and it was a test it would be 2 - 3 times each day and you would double back after a few days to make sure you got it and you would use more than 1 set of data for each day. when this is done your neural network should be more built up albeit slightly

now here is the fun part . if your neural network is growing and you like to cross reference data internally you start making more links to spots in the brain. shit converges. dont just seek to parrot things think about what something maybe similar to . make a mental link to other stuff. color, shape , time frame in which it was found in human history or time frame you found it yourself anything . those are lifelines to that area in your mind. the junction can be enough to allow it to stay in surface memory

Well documented cases of apricot seeds improving outcomes for cancer patients and also of bodybuilders losing eyes. Arnold is on his 6th set of eyeballs this year. Listen to this scholar and consider anybody who disagrees with them as a Russian hacker.

>It's basic science that you can improve your brain's performance
The question is, can you improve your intelligence in a meaningful way once you're an adult? We can always learn new skills, absolutely, that's the heart of neurogenesis, but the scaffolding for the brain is essentially static after childhood and I haven't seen examples of adults vastly improving their intelligence. The rare exceptions may be traumatic brain injury, which essentially destroys the scaffolding that's in place and causes a flood of BDNF to the affected area. This is the cause of sudden savant syndrome, but it's rare and most people who experience brain injuries never recover to their baseline levels. I feel like once we're adults, it's really about learning new skills and doing what we can to slow mental decline as much as possible.

you mean like how exercise can increase BDNF continually

Yes, but not near the same rate, and exercise seems to increase it preferentially in the hippocampus. Exercise is probably the best thing there is to slow memory decline, but exercise alone clearly doesn't create geniuses.

I'm french and learned english way faster than anybody else my age just by watching movies and tvshows (going from French Sub to English Sub to No Sub) and having all my tech set up to english language.

Will the brain really make sense of all that gibberish and symbols after awhile even as an adult? Assuming entirely no study outside of the basic alphabet sounds and maybe sentence structure (noun first or last), I think the interference from your native language would constantly prevent you from learning just from books/tv (unless you're 150iq).

Zone two training maximizes the number of mitochondria in muscle, this is why athletes do it even when their sport might not exist on that specific zone. For pretty much every sport, more mitochondria is better. The zone is in about 70%-80% of your max heart rate, the heart rate where you can still hold a conversation. Going zone three and higher starts to optimize for oxygen take rather than mitochondria density.

What's best for the brain? Does zone two increase brain mitochondria, brain isn't working like your thigh muscle when biking so it might not.
What are the mechanisms behind generic exercise being good for the brain other than the generic answer of it being good for your cardiovascular system which means it's good for the brain?

desu anything that releases BDNF will do, and that's most exercise, although I believe cardio has been shown to do so moreso than strength training. Although please don't cite me in your paper, I'm a stranger on the internet

It does change the way you percieve the world, not as natural language does, but it can be a good complement to it. Besides, there are a lot of patterns in speech that can be analyzed with a musical mindset: word cadence, intonation, etc.

I'm just thinking if it is possible to mitochondria density max your brain just like you can do it with muscle. Physical exercise might not do anything for mitochondria density in brain but it is still obviously useful.

>The number of mitochondria present in a cell depends upon the metabolic requirements of that cell
How to change the metabolic requirements for your brain cells, so that the tissue has to respond by increasing the mitochondria count? What is the cardio for the brain?
