Found this in my /b/ folder from several months ago. Is there really no solution or am I just retarded?

I got that, Phil *then* was 11. When Paul(then) = Phil(now), Phil(then) = 11.

33 - 22 = 11
22 - 11 = 11
11 * 3 = 33
no clue if the solution is unique but it probably is

In the current day Phil is 22 and Paul is 33. 11 years ago Phil was 11 and Paul was 22.

So currently Paul is 3 times older than Phil was when Paul was the same age that Phil is today.

a= age of paul (now)
b= age of phil (now)
c= age of paul (past)
d= age of phil (past)
>paul is 33
a=33.
>he's three times older than phil was when paul was the same age as phil today
a= 3*d and b=c.
note that a-b = c-d (the age gap doesn't change).
thus b + c = a + d
thus 2b = 4/3 a
thus b= 2/3 a = 22

x years ago Paul was the same age as Phil is today

33-x = Phil
x = 33-Phil

At that time Phil was older than Paul by

Phil-(33-Phil)-(33-(33-Phil))
Phil-33

So Paul is older than Phil by 3(Phil-33) years

33 = Phil+3(Phil-33)
Phil = 33

Sanity check:

Paul is 33 years old. He's 3 times older than his brother Phil was when Paul was the same age Phil is today.

Paul is the same age as Phil is today:

Paul is 33 years old. He's 3 times older than his brother Phil was today.

Phil is older by 0 years today:

Paul is 33 years old. He's 3*0 older.

33 = 33+3*0

So they're twins.

Phil is a 33yo looser, spending his entire life in front of a computer, living in the basement, complete disgrace to his parents, dad doesn't even talk to him, coming from a hard working day on a factory, feeding his whole family, he doesn't even have the nerves and energy to ''have a talk'', he's too afraid of himself because of the way he's gonna react to his son, he probably won't be able to keep himself in hands, and things gonna escalate to fight, which will bring his wife to tears, and the not very tight remaining bonds of their family will destroy, leading to divorce, nervous breakdown, alcohol, he might loose his job too, so when he imagines all this he just sticks up with routine, casual, cold chat with his wife, when both of them feel the existing drama and don't really care about things they say, but they keep acting, even though they know the tiniest droplet, like the wrong tone, sign of complaining, high bills, anything, can literally burst into a disaster. So they just play the roles, mom cooks, dad quickly eats his meal, (even though he's already been to KFC with his gf, that blowed him at the toilet afterwards, she's dyeing waiting for his divorce), so he eats his meal, leaving half of the food on plate, awkward silence makes him nervous, he says ''tnx hon'', and rushes to tv, where he soon falls asleep on the couch. One day he's going to enter Phil's room.

I just looked up the answer.
Somebody here said 22 but this one follows a much simpler line of reasoning.
3(33-p) = 33
99 - 3p = 33
99 - 33 = 3p
66 = 3p
p = 66/3
p = 22 yrs is Phil's age

>> No.11689857

>>11689400
>it's clearly referring to three times Phil's age

P=pauls age
H=phils age

P ------ P
H
bring P down to H and you get

P-------
P
H
So P's height is 3x H's new height. But H's new height depends on H's old height, which we don't know. So I doubt there is an answer

Paul age then = x1
Paul age now = x2
Phil age then = y1
Phil age now = y2

x2 = 33 (given)
y1 = x2 / 3 = 11 (specified by 1/3 age)
y2 = x1 (specified "when Paul was Phil's age)
x2 - x1 = y2 - y1 (equal passage of time)

DOF analysis: 4 eqns, 4 unknowns. Solvable.

By substitution:
33 - x1 = y2 - 11
33 - x1 = x1 - 11
44 = 2 * x1
x1 = 22

Phil is 22 years old.

You know Phil was 11 when Paul was Phil's current age. Also, Phil and Paul have aged an equal number of years. Since neither ages backwards, Paul is the elder brother, so when Phil was 11, Paul's age was between 11 and 33. It is then obvious that because Paul is 33 now, and they aged equal amounts, Phil must be 22 now. To see why, suppose Paul was 21. Then,
21+12=33
But,
11+12=23, not 21.
Or suppose Phil is 23. Then,
23-12=11
But,
33-12=21, not 23.
The answer 22 is also unique.

At 33 years old he is three times older than his brother Phil was, so Phil was, 11. Obviously English is not your first language.

>At 33 years old he is three times older than his brother Phil was, so Phil was, 11.
The times older than his brother's age would mean that his brother was 33/4. Learn the difference between "older" and "as old."

But it doesn't even say that. It says older than his brother was. This means older than his brother was older, not older than his brother was old.

I find it helps if you work backwards.

Paul was the same age as Phil is today. That must be 33-Phil years ago.

So at that time Phil was Phil-(33-Phil) = 2Phil-33 years old

Paul is 3 times older than that age so

33 = 4(2Phil-33)

Phil = 5*33/8 years old

'When Paul blah blah' = x years ago.
33 - x = Paul's age then = Phil's age
33 - Phil's age = x, their age difference
33/3 = 11 = Phil's age then = Paul then - x
Paul then - x = 33 - x - x
11 = 33 - 2x
x = 11
Phil is 22.
