I hear you guys think you're pretty smart. Well then, answer this.

A bat and a ball cost €1.10 in total. The bat costs €1.00 more than the ball.
How much does the ball cost?

Unknown, since multiple items bought together as a package are often discounted compared to buying them separately. 0.05€ is asinine, they'd go out of business.

1.10 = (ball + 1) + ball = 2ball + 1

.10 = 2ball

.05 = ball

ball + bat = 1.1
bat = ball + 1
ball + (ball + 1) = 1.1
2 ball + 1 = 1.1
2 ball = 0.1
ball = 0.05
bat = 1.05

Anyone teach or tutor math before? I see this shit all the time.
Every step is correct but the result is incorrect because of a careless error.

>How much does the ball cost?

the bat costs 1.00 more than the ball. If ball is .10 then the bat costs 1.10 by itself.

so the ball would have to be 0.5 and the bat be 1.05 for a total of 1.10.

All the time. It's typically either the answer just being written incorrectly or an arithmetic error earlier in the problem that cascades to a wrong answer.

The ball costs €0.10, because the bat costs €1.00 more than the ball and the total is €1.10, this must mean that the ball costs €1.10-€1.00 which is €0.10. I'm 149 IQ btw.

All first years are required to take calculus. That should be enough of a math background to answer this question correctly. Hell even a 5th grader could do it.
