You don't know why national borders exist do you? Germany is called Germany exactly because the people within that area, as in the borders of the country, self identify as German. If ethnicity isn't one's self identified group of origin, what is it? Modern countries were explicitly drawn in an attempt to preserve what people self identify as, that's why most of Prussia is no longer part of Germany, that's why Poland exists. Blacks are a little different, but they self identify as a group with a singular origin just as much.
