Our hospital got some bulk hand sanitizer gel and it smells EXACTLY like tequila. We're pretty sure it came from a distillery that converted to hand sanitizer. Is this safe to drink

What have you tried?

>> No.11626907

No because it might have other stuff in it like hydrogen peroxide. Isn't hand sanitizer usually made out of a different kind of alcohol?

Yeah

Absolutely terrible idea. The biggest concern is methanol which makes you go blind. There were even chemists drinking technical grade 100% alcohol, turns out it had significant traces of benzene in it and they all go sick (benzene is used to break azeotropes). Never fuck with industrial ethanol, even if it's designed to go on skin.

it's legit safer to drink moonshine than hand sanitizer

If you're that desperate for a drink, perfume is much safer to drink.

>> No.11626999

just kidding guys im not gonna drink it. but its crazy how it smells IDENTICAL to tequila despite being 62% ethyl alcohol. i called the company and some dude with broken english basically said all ethanol being produced now smells like this

Whatever machines and storage tanks they used probably smell like tequila and pass on the smell to the alcohol

Dunno about the US, but in the EU it is usually forbidden to use methanol in products alcoholics can get their hands on, and ethanol / IPA are denaturalised to make it unfit for consumption.

75% alcohol? That alone makes it not safe to drink, for me. You can drink it, tho. If you like. See what happens and tell me about it later because I am bored and need amusement.

Depends what they used as a gelling agent. It's probably food safe gelatin if I had to guess.

You'll know if it isn't. Any denaturing required a bittering agent like Potassium Benzoate. The gel will either be aloe or glycerine, both of which I think are reasonably body safe.

Yeah most of them are. They have this puke-thingy in them, but that's fine, just mix it with some orange juice for a killer screwdriver.

There's a reason there aren't any alcohol hand-sanitizers in public restrooms, the drunko's will simply take em

Alcohol is not safe to drink, I think... You may do things that have dangerous consequences.

OK, you're working at a hospital...

...and you have to ask if a fluid mixture of substances is safe for oral application.

Since both doctors and nursing personnel would know, you have to be part of the cleaning crew.
Solved the riddle - what do I get?

you do know ETHYL alcohol is the type you drink right? ISOPROPYL alcohol is what they use in hand sanitizer typically. It probably is made from tequila, but its also probably not safe to drink because of other ingredients. also technically any alcohol isn't safe to drink thats why you have to get your stomach pumped if you have too much
