consciousness is just solipsism in closet. on a physiological level this "consciousness" is just signals. on the more practical level it's just experience, patterns and you trying to make the right decision. you can't think of something that is absolutely new.
as for how evolution started, there is still no definitive answer but there are several theories to this like the RNA world hypothesis.
