>watch numberphile videos and read math books like Archimedes Revenge
>tell dad about cool things I watch like conjectures that fail at really high numbers
>dad always tells me I should major in math
>try to explain to him I am too retarded for an actual math major
>explain this is just entry tier pop math and an actual math degree would rape my ass
>he disagrees because I managed an A- in community college calculus 5 years ago
He deserved a better son.

Is there anything like CLEP exams but for higher math than calc 1?

When you break down college classes like calculus you come to realize that you pretty much already know what to do as long as you've memorized the formula and know how it works.
Everything is easy as long as you understand it and it takes the right teacher to teach it right to get students to understand it easier.

I think it's cute you can talk to your dad about stuff like that.
Also, I'd go with his advice and try your earnest and make him proud.
I'm your same age and I began with physics this year (good timing huh) and now I'm working through calc I and baby physics and after years of cope with the smart but lazy delusion I realized that all I needed was to focus and forget about wordly worries.

So, this is what you do:
Enrroll in college, watch lectures, get back on track and after you pass calc I (again) and Linear algebra it should be downhill if you managed to apply yourself.

Wish you all the best and make your people proud.

It seems the source of your problem is your relationship with your father, not math.
Math is cool, and if you like it, try pursuing it. But if you don't, it's not a big deal.
It's nice that you can talk to your dad about things like that. If you can have conversations with your dad like that, I'm sure he's very happy to be your father.
Don't spend your time with your father worrying about what you are to him. Just enjoy it. He won't always be there, and when he isn't, you will regret that your time with him was clouded with anxiety.

also 25. Have a degree in chemistry and just now figured out that I should've been studying math/physics. Gonna become a quantum chemist and work on theories to calculate electronic excitation in transition metal molecules now. It's alright bros. We're all gonna make it.

I was in the same situation. I pushed myself to self-learn mathematics. I started with Kenneth Ross' Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus, and did 90% of the exercises. I took a few months. This book teaches you how to prove something (the most important skill of any mathematician). After this I was able to self-learn with more higher level college texts.

If you put in the effort, there's no reason why you shouldn't succeed.

if you haven't tried studying math for 5+ hours a day yet you can't say you're too retarded for an actual math major. if you're interested and motivated you could probably pull it off, it's not like you have to be brilliant just to get the undergrad degree for it

OP. Believe me there are way more retards in math than you would think. Well not in pure but definitely in applied. Do you know why your dad listens to you and tells you to major in math? It's because he sees you have an interest in it, and wants you to be happy. He sees you all depressed blogging on 4channel and thinks you learning math will help. Just do it. Take out a loan if you have to, even a bachelor's in math pays itself back. Go for pure if you're interested, else just do applied and make your dad proud. Be the better son you think your dad deserves. You brainlet fuckup.

I feel like you need to decide whether you just have a casual interest in it or a desire to go into mathematics as a career. I think aerospace is cool as hell but I know my heart just wouldn't be in it as a career.

If you really enjoy studying math then go for it. I think that you will find a math undergraduate degree won’t “rape your ass” if you’re willing to put the work in. Remember, not everyone taking university level math is some young Euler or Ramujandran, and it’s not unusual to struggle.

Cmon OP, you go to school to learn. Don't shame yourself for entry tier pop math, some people don't even get that far. Understanding that you know nothing is a good mindset to go to school with, and you seem pretty passionate about learning math. I think you'd excel in college if you put in the effort.

I like math and science for fun but pursuing them as a job seems absolutely bonkers to me. There will always be someone smarter that can do the same work with 1/10 the effort. Then you end up working for normies anyway.
Although I do like how you can possibly end up getting a job that involves physical objects and not people.

My current job involves objects and I hate it. It's also monotonous but it could technically qualify as a stem job since it's basically electronics manufacturing and involves some "programming."

I'd like to teach myself to program again as I used to do a fair bit of that, but I have no idea what language to learn and how on earth to make myself marketable.
