Our civilization would fail completely without oil. Without it we could no longer produce plastics and non-natural fabrics. We also wouldn't be able to maintain the machines we use daily OR make anything new since the refined metals contained within the machines are refined by more machines that depend on oil to work properly. Even the sciences would slow due to less/inferior equipment and the inability to make machines to carry out tests.

So I ask you, name one alternative source of a expendable material that can replace crude oil and our dependency on the stuff.
