How is higher intelligence for a society desirable if it turns higher intelligence strongly correlates with mental illness and even bodily handicaps?

Correlation doesn't equal causation. It could be that very intelligent people aren't naturally more predisposed to mental illnesses, they're just less likely to be able to effectively function in modern society.
Even if more intelligent people are predisposed to mental illnesses, that doesn't mean they'd necessarily die more often if their intelligence and skills make up for it.
