I was given this thing and know that it's a(sub)1+a(sub)2+a(sub)3+a(sub)4

but the exercise says that the only valid answer is:

a(sub)j = 2 ;
a(sub)j = j ;
a(sub)j = 2 - j ;
a(sub)j = j^2
a(sub)j = 2/j
a(sub)j = sin(j(pi symbol))

How is any of these options correct?

Are you sure these are not separate problems rather than options??

These are all separate problems.

For a(sub)j = 2, Answer = 2+2+2+2 = 8
For a(sub)j = j, Answer = 1+2+3+4 = 10
For a(sub)j = 2 - j, Answer = 1+0-1-2 = -2
For a(sub)j = j^2, Answer = 1+4+9+16 = 30
For a(sub)j = 2/j, Answer = 2+1+2/3+2/4 = 25/6
For a(sub)j = sin((j(pi symbol)), Answer = sin(pi)+sin(2pi)+sin(3pi)+sin(4pi) = 0
