ITT we scientifically psychoanalyze mathfags.

Seethe, cope & project mathfag
So what infantile fixation is it that leads one to like math? What is it that draws someone to the misanthropic, antisocial and asocial world of abstract numbers?
My theory is that math draws social rejects because it lets them have a competition free outlet in which they may feel superior. Hence it feeds a superiority complex and represses an inferiority complex.

Actually psychometrics have some of the best replication rates in science. You confuse psychology with sociology and anthropology.

I'm a grad student in math. What draws me is an unstoppable desire to understand more.

Yes anon, I see, but why not learn more about computer science or chemistry or even a social science? (inb4 projection meme about them not being rigorous). Or philosopher or even something related to your own life. Why math?

Math is the lowest you can go. There's nothing more pure than exploring the consequences of our most basic assumptions. We know so little about such basic things. Like what do you know when you simply assume that there exists something as simple as a set? Not a lot, apparently. I want to know more.

Every other study feels almost like stamp collecting (I admit I'm plagiarizing here, but its how I feel). They all feel like something that will eventually be put into a model made up by mathematical pursuits.

Sure but why do you think this and why does "pure" appeal to you? Why call other studies, which have been far more fruitful than modern theoretical math, mere "stamp collecting"?

You definitely shouldn't be a psychologist.

Alright, I'll play along. My aunt used to scream the quadratic equation at me while sticking cardboard infinity symbols up my ass.
