SR can be understood by understanding EM well. They are actually the same theory; if you assume Coulomb's law to be true for things larger than 10^(-6) cm, then SR and Maxwell EM imply one another.

For GR, I didn't understand until I buckled down and seriously learned differential geometry.

The whole thing with physics is people think it's just the majority of it is calculus/algebra. There are other stuff: Geometry, Analysis, Statistics (Like probability)
Most of the math has been developed to understand physics. Physics takes a lot to understand it.
The reason why it tends to be appreciated is for its difficulty, the whole problem with that is most seem to make false shit ideas, yet it's complex, it gets accepted (Scientists can be liars), now if you disagree with this false shit idea you will have the same tier as a flat earther.
