What would've Darwin said if he could see pictures of bacteriophages?
One of the oldest "organisms" on earth and it looks like an advanced lunar module with highly specialized DNA injection mechanisms.
These things are seriously spooky.

Creepy analogy.
I never thought of it that way before.

he would think of them as a perfect way to improve vaccines.
he would see how these murderous little bastards don't attack anything except the certain bacteria they feed on.

like penicillin, it'll be revolutionary.
he would probably watch as one of these particular bacterophages attack the common cold and even destroy it...but strangely nothing else.

The drawings of these always look like tiny machines, but keep in mind that they are just tiny wibbly wobbly blobs of protein surrounding the genetic material. Evolution has optimized the viral structure over time so that they can be built from small repeating patterns. The head part is an icosahedron that can be constructed by repeating a simple small protein pieces. The sheath is just a basic coil structure.

It's nothing too exciting.

It's not strange at all. Many organisms have a narrow food target. Bed bugs specialize on humans only, for example.

Mosquitos also look weirdly "advanced" except they have evolved face/eyes and thus look less machine-like to us.
I guess there are selective advantages to the design

actually your thinking here is very flawed and open for exploits. i can think of two ways i could manipulate you right off the bat.

Its really disappointing how phages were ditched in favor of antibiotics which are such a low IQ alternative
