If I bought a used electron microscope is it possible to make money with it? I'm fascinated with these things. Could I become a lab and people send me shit to look at with my dealie and I charge them for pictures of their shit?

You'd need formal qualifications and experience before anyone would consider it. These methods are incredibly sensitive and can be tough to use.

If you've got the start up cash, maybe try something like Raman Spectroscopy. Using one of those you can get pictures and collect spectra

So you think anyone would pay some guy with an electron microscope rather than an official and established service?

Maybe start by taking some cool microphotography and put it on the internet to make a name for yourself, and demonstrate you know how to use the instrument, then see what kind of work you can get.

You ever used these methods? They are a bitch. Running costs and maintenance mean that small companies can barely sustain them. Not to mention any lab worth their salt will just use dedicated services around.
