I worked at microsoft as an ML scientist. My main task was to build chatbots to replace tech support agents (basically everyone at microsoft is retarded so to them, requesting someone new to solve the turing test within 6 months is perfectly routine).
Basically nothing of my expertise was any useful, nor was anything I learned in school. Any skills I used were the shoddy self-learned stuff I had since before high-school.
There is no place for science in industry, it's way too product oriented. You can't do good science on a 3-6 month deadline, yet that's what's expected in industry. Also, no chance at all to work on anything fun or even useful. Academia is the only way to do good science (and even then there's tons of politics to navigate) and the only way to have any kind of freedom in terms of actually doing research.
