Clinically depressed anon here. I believe it's due to different factors: first and foremost since this disease is associated with abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (I've been explained meds are aimed at reestablishing the right levels) I think there's a big genetic component which can be seen as a risk factor. Then your personality, which is part of your upbringing, has a role too: being a sensible person for instance increases your risk factor. Then something must happen, either an external or internal circumstance (like the death of a loved one, or failing at an important task), which cause obsessive thoughts that end up getting out of control and spiral down taking you with them through chronic states of anxiety and/or sadness and depression. The key word here is "chronic": everyone feels bad, and that's normal, but being constantly haunted by the darkness of your mind isn't a healthy condition. After all mental illnesses are those internal states that make you stop functioning correctly and make life miserable. As a friend psychiatrist once said:

But here's the thing about that:
a) Unless your personal genome is sequenced, how do you know whether you have bad genes? You don't.
b) Scientists don't even know which genes are associated with an elevated risk of depression yet. They've just started producing studies about this in the last couple of years.
c) Those genes could be anything. Maybe some of them are genes that make people fat. Fat people would probably lead unhappier lives, and therefore be more depressed. We have no idea what those genes do. It could really be anything.

Some people find it useful to think that they have bad genes that make them depressed, but I don't. As I said, unless your genome is sequenced, you have no idea what genes you have. And scientists don't really know what genes are associated with depression anyway, nor what those genes actually do. I know that my bad moods in life have been caused by my shitty decisions.
