Agreed. He's kinda similar to Penrose or even Atiyah or Einstein, long stellar career during prime years, followed by crankery in old age. It's a good observation that old physicists can be that way. There are many exceptions though.

I do agree however that Dyson has similarities to Penrose. one guy you should add to that list is 't Hooft. the three of them represent luminaries who all went a bit "fringe" after the string era took off.

then again none of them are as smart as Witten so string doubters are outbrained in this argument

Cranky, but at least he proposes how to test some of his wild ideas. Like he says their could be life that makes its own green houses far out in space, and then proposes how to look for it by shining a bright light. Nuts, but it's testable.
