It meant to force Europeans to stop believing in reincarnation. To stop believing they would return after death. Polar Bears have a longer neck than other bears due to one of their hunting strategies being shoving their heads into ice holes
Kodiak or Grizzlies are probably the better single combat species they have longer claws and better grip too.
