I have a 38 year old colleague, who tossed up a seemingly innocent passing comment on our way to work, which almost made me catatonic in its sheer innocent ignorance.
In fact, it was so appalling, I had to actually ask whether he's pulling my leg or not.
He said:
It's a wonder how sun and moon fly from east to west every day and night.
I fucking froze.
I was reluctant to go all ACKSHUALLY on his ass, because I seriously couldn't tell, if he was joking or not, but then he went and hammered the point down with a nuke, saying
>like, how exactly are some of the stars just falling down to earth sometimes?
At that point, I was lost.
I couldn't say a word and just looked at the scenery in quiet disappointment.
This man is by no metric stupid.
He's very bright, judging by my other interactions with him.
Why do people like this still exist in this day and age?

I knew this guy on 4chan who would post images that when you clicked on them, revealed that the thumbnail was already fullsize. Such behavior is an affront to the universe and causes stars to jump out of the sky. But also they sometimes commit suicide to prevent going supernova.

Humans evolved as social creatures. And you don't need strong cognition if your peer group has members with strong cognition. Evolutionary shortcut.

Look, he's probably better than you at some other shit. Social skills, memory, attractiveness, whatever.

why is every .gif just an image on 4chan?

I did laugh, but it doesn't really answer how the actual fuck are there still people, who think meteors are actual stars falling down on earth.
And we are not talking about some isolated tribesmen in leaf skirts, but people who operate smartphones and computers.

He was joking and you have an autism spectrum disorder

how do you know stars ARENT falling down to earth? you can't prove that.

seeing as how he was your frendo, why not educate him as to what's really going on.

He went almost 4 decades happily without knowing it and I'm not a person who gets enjoyment from knowing more than someone else, let alone rubbing it in.
I felt genuinely distraught and didn't know what course of action is worse.
Stars, formation of solar system, earth's rotation and getting hit by the leftovers is a hefty chunk of trivia to dump on someone as a response to what pretty much amounts to unconventional bit of small talk. I was just frustrated to be reminded of how little knowledge normal, functioning humans actually operate on, despite the cumulative knowledge being much, MUCH more than one can actually learn in a lifetime.

well you educated us as to his ignorance, so i guess you let someone know something

Geniuses larp as retarded and also aren't afraid to reveal ignorance

Assuming one or both of you aren't/weren't trolling:
he obviously hasn't needed to know so far, so who cares? Not everyone is interested by the same things as you.
His curiosity and willingness to be honest about what he knows are both good.
He might have been making a poetic statement. And, you dumb cocksmoker, there's no universally preferable frame of reference in physics, so the sun and moon flying from east to west is perfectly fine.

Seems like he was just using allegorical language to lament about the wonders of the world, while you have autism and do not understand.

He has an earth centric "world view". It may be quaint but it's not out ignorant.

Intelligence doesn't stop people from having untrue beliefs. Beliefs are emotional, humans survival instinct honed for billions of years is primarily based on intuition, gut feelings, emotions. The human brain was conditioned to survive, not to know the truth. It will take millions of years of natural selection to breed out this incorrect sense of intuition.
