It's a loose concept having to do with the fact that they had no idea what the fuck the wave function was supposed to be.

All particles, including photons, in theories described by the Schrodinger Equation and the various derivatives have a wavefunction associated with them depending on what kind of energy fields they are surrounded by. That wavefunction is used to calculate probabilities of certain outcomes. That's all it is.

What a matter wave actually "is" is metaphysical and non-scientific, and left up to interpretations of QM rather than hard science.

Matter is a wave when it needs to be and its a particle when it needs to be. If you can't reconcile this you need to do more study (not watch youtube videos) because I can't explain it to you in a single post.
