How do you "check" if you have good potential to make research that will be actually useful and impact the world? I don't want to put years of effort only to realize that it would have been better spent in the industry.

do you enjoy doing research and solving new problems? If yes, go for it. If no, don't go for it.

Here's a quick test if you don't know the answer. Ask yourself a question that you don't know the answer to and which would not be trivial to look up the answer to. Then find a satisfying answer to the question. Did you enjoy the process of finding the answer?
