I'm not joking
>senior
>majoring in math, especially love number theory, algebra, combinatorics, but enjoy every kind
>hear about category theory
>supposedly the "rosetta stone" of math
>"it's like seeing in color for the first time in your life"
>sounds cool, check it out
>pick up an introductory cat theory textbook
>hooked
>barely do anything but go to class and read my textbook for 2 weeks
>holy shit, it's so amazing
>bring up category theory in algebra
>professor says "Yes, you can do it that way, but that requires a lot of stuff we won't be getting into"
>pick up another cat theory book
>it's an addiction now
>can't stop reading about categories
>skip class that evening, book too good
>fast forward a month
>barely interested in number theory or combinatorics, algebra feels too applied
>only thinking about categories 24/7
>can't appreciate mathematical beauty anymore, it's all just there to be categorized
>failing classes because i never read the textbooks, just more on cat theory
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
CATEGORY THEORY IS RUINING MY LIFE AND I CAN'T STOP
IT'S LIKE HEROIN AT THIS POINT
SAVE ME

It's a good subject, but it's something best experienced as a way to unify what you're been studying. Type Theory is in a similar fashion.

>CATEGORY THEORY IS RUINING MY LIFE AND I CAN'T STOP
It's not.
Just because you changed interest, doesn't mean what you do now is of more or less value than before.
And university exams are a scheme - you're there to form yourself as a person.

>barely interested in number theory or combinatorics, algebra feels too applied
It comes and goes and will come back. Learn what you're interested in. Don't conclude you should do this or that unless you have a good answer to what the meaning of life is. Of course, if you know your purpose as a person, you can take that to form goal and that may affect what you study. But just because you shifted interests, doesn't imply anything negative.
