Is PBS Spacetime a good series? I feel like it's more rigorous and less flavor-of-the-month than other Youtube pop-sci series, but still entry-level enough that a layman can understand it. Or is it too reductionist that the understanding you come away with is actually damaging?

people pretty frequently comment that he looks like a full-sized peter dinklage which is certainly unfortunate, but I think he's pretty good at communicating science concepts.

no it's pretty bad. i don't think i've ever learned anything from it.
he talks at a fast pace using lots of jargon that you only know if you already know what he's talking about, at which point watching the video is pointless.

i think people get the feeling they are learning some from it while in reality don't learn shit

>he talks at a fast pace using lots of jargon
from what I remember they try to define or at least give an intuition on a given concepts, but yeah, you need to be quite fluent in math to catch them realtime watching video.

>>11348532
the only ones that are like that are the ones that are part of a long series of videos where he goes over the other concepts involved. If you watch all the preparatory material they're normally pretty easy to follow, even if they're still conceptually difficult.

They don't over simplify all of the concepts with mundane and unprecise analogies like many pop sci channels, which makes them the only decent pop sci platform.

What are some good science/space related youtubers /sci/ approved? I dislike kurzgesagt for their opinions on politics and i don't know any other channel with this kind of content.

ViaScience (exceptionally based: top-tier mixture of mathematical derivation, animations and graphics for intuition, and real examples with at-home demonstrations whenever possible)
David Butler (primarily astronomy with some general physics content, relaxing to watch but also emphasizes how things have come to be known)
Fermilab (good special relativity and particle physics content, and two videos on light refraction that everybody should watch)
Eugene Khutoryansky (idiosyncratic animations that can be extremely helpful when a physics/circuitry/applied math concept just isn't clicking for you)
Science Asylum (presentation style can border on cringe for me, but clarifies many misconceptions in physics)

I agree 100%, I think he's the only pop-sci that has actually explained that "vector fields" are not real and are just a metaphysical representation, that we should transalate the concept of a "vector field" to a real thing a real field that is basically all around us the electric field the magnetic field etc.

btw for some reason a lot of people here don't even know what "metaphysical" means.

I say everybody should watch them because wrong "explanations" of light refraction are very widespread, even among those with physics education. These two videos specifically address several wrong explanations, show that they are wrong, and then present a much more accurate explanation.

Cont.
It's sort of ironic because Science Asylum's explanation for light bending falls for the Fermat's Principle meme (he presents it as an explanation in itself, rather than a consequence of the underlying physics). To be fair though, a true physical explanation of refraction of individual photons would be very heavy for pop-sci (though at heart it basically still boils down to Fermilab's explanation).

I wish they showed a little bit of the math of what they're talking about.

Not even talking like lines of calculations, just an equation or two that people with a degree in math or physics could understand or at least read. But I understand the target audience is a lot bigger than that tiny group.
