11308904 No.11308904 [Reply] [Original]

Kablooey edition

WHEN: 4-Hour window starting 8:00 AM EST / 13:00 UTC on Saturday, January 18
STREAM: https://www.spacex.com/webcast [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhrkdHshb3E]
Probability of weather delay: 10% [https://www.patrick.af.mil/Portals/14/Weather/L-1%20Forecast%2018%20Jan%20Launch.pdf?ver=2020-01-17-103518-317]
Backup launch date: January 19 & January 20 (Same window)

Launch site: LC-39A, Kennedy Space Center, Florida (East Coast)
Booster number & previous flights: B1046.4 [Bangabandhu 1, Merah Putih, SSO-A]
First stage landing: No—the booster will be destroyed
SpaceX press kit: https://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/in-flight_abort_test_press_kit.pdf
Dragon number & previous flights: C205.1; N/A (Has Mark 3 parachutes)

In-Flight Abort overview:
>For this test, Falcon 9’s ascent trajectory will mimic a Crew Dragon mission to the International Space Station to best match the physical environments the rocket and spacecraft will encounter during a normal ascent. However, SpaceX has configured Crew Dragon to intentionally trigger a launch escape after Max Q, the moment of peak mechanical stress on the rocket.
>After Crew Dragon’s SuperDracos shutdown, the spacecraft will passively coast to apogee, the highest point in its arc. Near apogee, Crew Dragon’s trunk will separate and the smaller Draco thrusters will re-orient the spacecraft for reentry and parachute deploy. When the appropriate conditions are met, Dragon’s drogue and main parachutes will sequence to provide for a soft landing in the Atlantic Ocean near SpaceX Dragon recovery teams.

Stats:
This will be the 30th booster reflight, and 79th Falcon 9 launch. It is the 2nd SpaceX launch of 2020.

the real problem is not the weather but the conditions in the ocean for the recovery crews. So, the % delay probability is technically a bit higher.
Also, the launch weather criteria are different for this launch, and the % reflects as such.

It would be cool of they still tried to at least splash land it because why the fuck not. But I guess there's still too much air for sideways flight at that altitude to turn it ass backwards for retro burn even if they retain enough control authority to keep it stable with main engine shut down. Also there may be just too much red tape and general bureaucracy when it comes to NASA and manned flight to risk anything going wrong with the capsule just because they wanted to dick around.

A liquid rocket in mid air running on non-hypergolics doesn't "just explode", fuel has to actually mix and combust. There will be a delay even in the worst case, and the computers monitoring everything react it millisecond level. Engines would get scram shutdown in any anomaly, or obviously would "shut down" regardless if they aren't getting more fuel.

So yeah, it'd get away just fine regardless.

yes, it would. There is some really good overlay of the exploding falcon on the pad with the dragon pad abort test - I can only find the example with music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9kovJ5SyjM

Part of the abort command is shutting down all engine power anyway, so this is a very likely abort way.
You can also compare it to CRS-7, where something similar happened; a tank exploded / unzipped, without shutting down the engines. There the dragon survived without abort system (!)
